Peak performance isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being ready at the right time.

At the elite level, timing matters just as much as talent. You can’t afford to peak too early, and you can’t afford to arrive flat. It takes real awareness of both mind and body, plus the right coaching, to build toward your best when it counts most.

Mike O’Higgins breaks down what that really looks like for high-performing athletes: staying primed, managing fatigue, navigating injuries and competing demands, and trusting the process all the way to go time.

Success isn’t about chasing perfect results — it’s about preparing so well that when the moment comes, you know you gave yourself every chance to execute.

In this clip, Mike O’Higgins talks about the difference between testing well and racing well — and how even when you’re at the top of your game, the real challenge is translating that performance when it matters most.

Feel it. Let it in. Then set it aside and get back to the process.
That’s the mindset: honor the people you love, enjoy the moment, and still stay locked in when it’s time to perform.

Seeing friends and family before competing can be emotional — but when you trust your routine, it becomes fuel, not distraction.
Presence, gratitude, and focus can all live in the same performance.

Goal setting at the Olympic level is about more than chasing a result.
It’s about narrowing your focus to what you can actually control, trusting your role, and giving yourself the best possible chance to perform when it matters most.

In bobsleigh, so much can influence the outcome — the push, the drive, the equipment — but the real power comes from staying locked in on your part of the process. Mike O’Higgins reminds us that success isn’t guaranteed, but preparation, accountability, and no regrets are always within reach.

That’s the mindset.
That’s the work.
Flex your mind.

In this episode of the ZUPI Autotelic Mindset Podcast, I sit down with two‑time Olympic bobsledder Mike O’Higgins to unpack the mental game behind hurtling down an ice track at over 130 km/h.

Mike shares his journey from first discovering bobsleigh to representing Canada at two Olympic Winter Games, and what it really takes to keep showing up on the world stage. We dive into how he builds confidence, handles fear and doubt, resets after mistakes, and stays locked in through the highs and lows of an Olympic cycle.

If you’re an athlete, coach, or anyone chasing high performance, this conversation is a powerful look at resilience, self‑awareness, and choosing to flex your mind when it matters most.

Spending time with this crew of young gymnasts was a reminder that the strongest skills aren’t just physical—they’re mental. Today we dug into the foundations of a performance mindset: how to handle nerves, reset after mistakes, and stay focused on what you can control so you can show up as your best self, day after day.

Speaking with young, aspiring athletes is one of the favourite parts of this work. Helping them build confidence, emotional awareness, and healthy habits now gives them tools they can carry through sport and life—whether they’re chasing Olympic dreams or simply learning to believe in themselves.

Thanks again for having me come out!!

Success starts with F.O.C.U.S. Your goals aren’t just about the finish line—they’re about embracing the process, being present, and staying balanced every step of the way.

Let’s break it down:
🔸 Forward Thinking: Are your goals true to your vision and values?
🔸 Opportunity: Will pursuing them help you grow—mentally, physically, spiritually, or emotionally?
🔸 Challenging: Are you ready to step outside your comfort zone?
🔸 Unity: Can you fully commit to what you want?
🔸 Self: Is this goal truly for YOU?

Achieving greatness means being mindful in the moment, respecting the journey, and striving for real balance.

Nate Riech reminds us that confidence can be fleeting. One moment you feel on top of the world, and the next, a single glance at a competitor can shake you. But focus? That’s something you can train, build, and rely on—just like a muscle.

When the pressure’s on, it’s your ability to lock in and stay present that truly makes the difference. Confidence may come and go, but focus will always carry you through.

Terry Kelly’s reminds us when you choose joy when competing and training for competitions, it’s easy to get caught up in pressure, expectations, and the scoreboard. But the real magic happens when you choose joy—no matter the outcome.
Choosing joy means celebrating every effort, embracing the journey, and finding gratitude in the chance to play. It’s about high-fives with teammates, learning from setbacks, and remembering why you fell in love with your sport in the first place.
When you compete with joy, you play freer, bounce back faster, and inspire those around you. Win or lose, you walk away with memories, growth, and a smile that can’t be measured on a stat sheet.
So next time you step onto the field, court, or track, make the choice: Play with joy. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes!
