✨Navigating motherhood whether a new mom or a veteran can be challenging at times and often lead you on a roller coaster of cozy cuddles to emotional and physical challenges. This is why postpartum affirmations could be a great way to help you cope with those negative feelings that creep up. Positive affirmations are short and powerful phrases that are oftentimes repeated to oneself to encourage a positive mindset. They help us to shift our focus from negative to positive.
What are some of your positive affirmations that have helped you? ⬇️

Hey Friends!! It’s Sadhna here. I know it’s been A WHILE! A lot of life has happened for me since my last post in September 2022 and I’m excited to get back into the swing of things providing education and support to you and your growing families.

Here’s what I’ve been up to!
📍I relocated to Guelph from my hometown of Whitby and moved in with my fiancé now husband in November 2022 (check him out he’s always up to something cool).
👩🏽‍⚕️I started a new role in Guelph as a Mental Health Crisis Responder working alongside the Guelph Police although it was rewarding it was equally taxing on my own emotional and mental health. I have recently moved on from that role to outpatients mental health in Peel Region.
✈️I spent some time travelling and who knew getting lost at the Grand Canyon with my sister was on our trip itinerary.
❤️‍🩹I spent a few weeks helping to nurse my resilient husband-to-be back to health 8 weeks before our wedding from a very scary fall. Thankfully he made a full recovery.
👰🏽‍♀️💍🤵🏽‍♂️Lived out very Bollywood wedding dreams with our friends and family in August 2023.
🐬I also made a new special friend in Mexico (see the photo).
+everything in between

What have you been up to!? Let me know⬇️

If you have any friends or family that are looking to growing their families or expecting please feel free to share my page with them. I greatly appreciate all your continuous love and support.

🕊 Maternal Su***de Awareness Week Sept 4th – Sept 10th 2022
Did you know that the leading cause of maternal deaths is due to maternal su***de? Although there is limited research on maternal su***de rates in Canada, the US has been able to collect data in general about maternal su***de.
• Research suggests su***de is a leading cause of maternal death in the 1st year following childbirth
•Maternal su***de deaths are more common than maternal deaths caused by postpartum hemorrhage or hypertensive disorders
•Su***de accounts for up to 20% of maternal deaths that occur during the fourth trimester
•Maternal su***de is most frequently completed between 6 to 12months postpartum
•The severity and rapidly evolving nature of postpartum psychosis increases the risk of maternal su***de
•Depression during pregnancy greatly increases thoughts about su***de while pregnant
Other risk factors that may contribute to maternal su***de risk include:
•Sleep disturbances can increase risk of su***de in depressed postpartum moms
•Previous su***de attempts and thoughts about su***de (suicidal ideation) can be risk factors for maternal su***de completion.
The research provided above is a clear indicator that normalizing the conversation surrounding maternal su***de is so important in raising awareness as well increasing preventative measures.

✨ May is off to a gloomy start but let us not let that dull our sparkle and motivation in supporting women across the globe as we recognize today as World Maternal Mental Health Day and this week May 2nd– May 8th, 2022 (Mother’s Day) as Maternal Mental Health Week. May is also recognized as Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month!

You may be wondering why is this important? Women go through many physiological and mental health changes while trying to conceive, while pregnant, throughout postpartum, and beyond, that can lead to women being more vulnerable to developing mental health illnesses. A mother/birthing person's mental health and well-being directly affects the fetus, newborn, relationship with partner and overall quality of life.

As a postpartum doula and mental health nurse I know firsthand how important access to the necessary mental health supports and resources are to an individual's overall physiological and mental wellbeing. It’s also important to note that this is not just an issue in North America but globally where resources are limited and depending on various social determinants of health (income and social status, employment and working conditions, education and literacy, Social supports and coping skills, access to health services, gender, culture, race, etc.)
TW: postpartum psychosis & su***de
Today so many are walking across Canada in honour of Flora, a Toronto mom who was experiencing untreated postpartum psychosis after giving birth to her baby girl last fall which led to her ending her life. There are too many stories like Flora’s. Thank you to everyone who has shared, liked, and donated to my fundraising efforts via in support of Flora’s baby and perinatal mental health.

🌿When it comes to welcoming your baby into the world, you should feel in awe of your body and what it has accomplished. No matter how you delivered — in your bathtub at home, unmedicated, medicated(epidural), or a schedule c-section all forms of birth are natural.
Remember to be kind to one another, everyone’s birthing experiences are different and women shouldn’t be ashamed to share how they birthed their baby.

✨ I had a great time last night connecting and chatting with all things maternal mental health.

Did you know that recent international studies have shown that since the pandemic started about 1 in 3 moms are most likely to develop a postpartum and anxiety disorder, whereas it was once 1 in 5. Imagine how many women are underreporting these feelings out of fear of being stigmatized.

We chatted about:
🗣 Baby Blues vs Postpartum Depression
🗣Knowing when you need to seek help/ensure partners are aware of warning signs
🗣The importance of having support from friends, family, and health professionals during postpartum healing
🗣How to take care of yourself during postpartum - taking care of both your mental health and physical health
🗣Where/who to turn for help for perinatal mental Health support /Resources

If you or someone you know is in need of support please feel free to reach out to us💛 Looking to advocate for maternal mental health in Canada? I encourage you to follow
