Wilkie District Fire Department Promoting 2025 Fire Prevention Week Campaign:
“Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home”
Fire Prevention Week, running October 5–11, 2025, focuses on educating the public about the safe use, charging, and disposal of lithium-ion batteries are a critical fire safety topic in today's technology-driven world.
Most of the electronics we use daily such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, lawn equipment, e-cigarettes, headphones, and even children’s toys are powered by lithium-ion batteries. In fact, nearly every rechargeable device in our homes relies on this powerful battery technology.
However, when lithium-ion batteries are damaged, used improperly, or charged unsafely, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode. That’s why it’s vital to understand how to use them safely.
“Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, convenient, and they’re just about everywhere.
“This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign helps people understand the importance of using these batteries correctly to prevent fires in the home. We’re encouraging everyone to follow the Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely approach.”
Fire Safety Tips for Lithium-Ion Batteries:
• Buy safely: Only purchase devices and batteries from reputable retailers and
manufacturers. Look for certification marks from recognized testing laboratories.
• Charge safely: Use only the charger that came with the device. Don’t charge under pillows, on beds, or on couches.
• Recycle safely: Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash. Take them to proper recycling or hazardous waste disposal centers.
