To enjoy a restful night's sleep, it is essential to practise good sleep hygiene.

Most of us know that this involves less screen time and alcohol just before bed, but many of us resist the idea because watching the TV with a glass of wine is an excellent way to wind down. Unfortunately, this habit doesn't really help you relax. It stimulates the nervous system, preventing you from sleeping well.

Try these tips ahead of your night's sleep:

- Avoid blue light. Try wearing blue light glasses if you are using your phone, laptop or watching TV before bed.
- Switch your phone to flight mode.
- Your bedroom should be cool, airy, silent and dark.
- Don't eat or drink alcohol

A racing mind and breathing irregularities both contribute to insomnia.

Try these tips to help you with your night's sleep.

The importance of clear nasal passages and what to be aware of πŸ‘ƒ

Nasal passages are equipped with structures like hairs and mucous membranes that serve as natural filters, trapping particles such as dust, allergens, and microbes from the air we breathe. Additionally, as air passes through the nasal passages, it gets humidified, which helps prevent dryness and irritation of the respiratory tract.

Optimize your breath! 🌬️ Nasal breathing, guided by correct tongue posture, ensures the air undergoes ideal filtration, humidification, and oxygenation before reaching your lungs. Vital for quality sleep when the body craves a constant oxygen supply.

The power of intraoral pressure dynamics! When the lips are sealed, and the tongue is up against the palate, you enhance high tongue posture naturally.

Elevating tongue posture at rest improves nasal breathing, curbs mouth breathing and snoring, and addresses issues like tongue-base obstruction, positional sleep apnea, and UARS.

For those dealing with a low tongue position linked to functional ankyloglossia (tongue-tie), myofunctional therapy and lingual frenuloplasty can make a significant difference. Elevate your tongue posture for improved breathing and better sleep!

The tongue's position plays a role in directing airflow for breathing. πŸ‘…

When the tongue is up and sealed to the palate, it helps create a seal that encourages airflow through the nose.

Lowering the tongue allows air to flow in and out of the mouth, which is how mouth breathing occurs. The tongue's position can impact the passage of air and influence the breathing route.

Could breathing through your mouth affect your ability to think and learn?

Research on breathing and the effects on physiology and health is a growing and emerging field. One of the most significant papers, published by Zelano et al (2016) shows there is a link in human function between nasal breathing and the functions and oscillations of the limbic system - the brain's ability to facilitate memory storage/retrieval, self-regulate, process information, etc.

This research is significant, especially in relation to working with children, as those who can restore nasal breathing are enabling not only improved functioning of airway health but the capacity of children to process and self-regulate their emotional states and wellbeing.

If you or your child does mouth breathe, contact your nearest practitioner to help your child overcome this.

How do you keep good oral rest posture when you are sleeping 😴

When you have tongue range of motion, function and space ……….πŸ‘…

➑️ the tongue makes a negative suction cup effect to seal itself to the roof of the mouth.

➑️ negative suction cup effect prevents the tongue from collapsing backwards.

Breathing the right way is important for growing up strong and healthy. When kids breathe through their nose, with their lips closed and their tongue resting on the roof of their mouth, optimal airway growth.

The tongue helps support the upper jaw to grow wider, which leads to a wider airway. This is why it's so important for kids to breathe through their nose with their lips closed and their tongue in the right place.
