African Heritage Month begins this Sunday, February 1. Please join Mayor Abraham Zebian-West Hants Regional Municipality as he raises the African Nova Scotian Flag tomorrow, January 30, at 9am. The flag pole is located at Windsor Waterfront Loop, King St.

This flag is beautiful, with deep meaning. Do you know its story?

"The red represents blood and sacrifice.
The gold conveys cultural richness.
The green symbolizes fertifility and growth.
The black stands for the people.

The wave in the bottom centre has a dual meaning, representing the ocean and movement as well as honouring the journey of African Nova Scotian Ancestors through the middle paggage during the slave trade.

On the left is half of a stylized heart (a version of the Sankofa symbol) with a yin and yang-like symbol embedded to represent heartbreak balanced with awareness.

The image is encompassed with an incomplete circle representing those things absent but yet to come."

That last sentence speaks truth here in West Hants and beyond. We, as a community, have an opportunity and responsibility to come together and work towards a more welcoming, safe, and inclusive community. We can all do better. With the Equity, Anti-Racism, and Accessibility Strategy Plan, a focused effort has been created to work on the 'things absent but yet to come.' Interested in learning more?
