๐ŸŒŸ Some big changes are on the horizon for Love the Bump!! ๐ŸŒŸโ
โ
I recently accepted a new full-time position with a local non-profit!! Itโ€™s an opportunity that I am so thrilled and excited about, but Iโ€™m also feeling scared and nervous about the changeโ€ฆare there any doulas out there that specialize in big life changes? If thatโ€™s not a thing, it sure should be a thing.โ
โ
I wish I could do both jobs full-time, but unfortunately I found out that I canโ€™t clone myself and that I have to choose just one. Bummer, I know! So I have made some changes to the business to move it from a full-time endeavor to more of a side gig situation. โ
โ
๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿป๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿพ I will only be accepting 2 birth doula clients per due month. For years I have been accepting 4 per due month, and was still having to turn people away. With only 2 slots available I will book up quickly, so reach out earlier in your pregnancy to secure a spot ๐Ÿ‘‰๏ธ www.lovethebump.ca
โ
๐Ÿ’ผ I will be relinquishing my beautiful office space. I loved my space, itโ€™s so pretty and inviting. And I'm not going to lie, I also loved not having to drive around the city to meet clients ๐Ÿ˜‚. But, doesnโ€™t make sense to have an office space for a side hustle, does it? So I will be kicking it old school and reverting back to 2018 ways by traveling to my clients for all their prenatal visits.โ
โ
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ I will no longer be offering group childbirth education classes. My last group class will be this Sunday ๐Ÿ˜ญ. I will still be teaching the exact same fun curriculum in person for private classes or through Badass Birth Academy, so there are still lots of ways to learn about childbirth through yours truly. Here is a shameless plug for my digital course if you want to know more about it ๐Ÿ‘‰๏ธwww.badassbirthacademy.com

Itโ€™s been a pleasure and a privilege to serve the Windsor-Essex birthing community in such a big way over these past 10 years. Love you guys so much โค๏ธ

Pro tip alert! You know that silver basins in your hospital room? If it's not being used for vomit (sorry, I know) then fill it with ice water as a fast and easy way to refresh cold cloths during the pushing stage ๐ŸงŠ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿฅถ

Itโ€™s not uncommon for expecting parents to start my classes feeling nervous and down-right terrified about childbirth. But giving birth doesn't have to be scary! One of my greatest joys is seeing these same parents end my class feeling lighter, excited, confident, and prepared for labor.

We talked cravings, now let's talk aversions! They can be super common during pregnancy. I was pretty much allergic to my kitchen, and couldn't cook anything. I also couldn't clean ๐Ÿคฃ

๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿณ Eggs were a no.
๐Ÿšซโ˜•๏ธ Coffee was a big no.
๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿงบ Oddly enough, the smell of freshly cleaned laundry was a HARD no.

What did you have to avoid during your pregnancy?

These days it's standard practice to do immediate skin-to-skin, which means that baby is placed belly down, directly on your chest, right after birth. It has tons of great benefits, like:
๐ŸŒก๏ธ regulating baby's temperature
โ™ฅ๏ธ regulating baby's heart and breathing rates
๐Ÿค™ calming the baby
๐Ÿคฑ helping initiate breastfeeding

A lot of birthers LOVE immediate skin-to-skin....but a lot of birther don't. And that's okay, too! I mean, labour just lasted heaven knows how long, and a hot minute is sometimes needed. You know, some time to process the fact that a brand new human just came out of your body. So if you are not jiving with the skin-to-skin, ask your partner to step in. I'm guessing they have skin, too ๐Ÿ˜‰

In my class, I often refer to the "princess treatment" that entitles the birther to ask for anything they want. Why? Well, because they just birthed a whole freakin human from their body!โ
โ
So ask for what you want, and your support person can't say no. โ
๐Ÿจ 2am ice cream run? Sure! โ
โ˜• Super complicated Starbucks order? You bet! โ
๐Ÿš€ Want to Elon-it-up and name your baby X AE A-12? How could they say no?!โ
โ
What was the first thing that you asked for after you gave birth? For me, it was Mu Shu Vegetable from Shin Shin!

"Oh, you're a birth doula? Cool. That means you go to home births, right?"

This is the response I get when I tell people what I do for a living, and probably the most common misconception about my job.

I mean, yes, I do support home births. But pretty infrequently, actually. Simply because home births are not as popular as hospital births. 95% of my clients give birth in a hospital setting, and I am very familiar with the facilities and friendly with the staff.

So if you are planning a hospital birth, you too can have a doula. Woohoo! You might even pick me...I am a pretty great one ๐Ÿ˜‰
