In Ontario, AHACs were first announced in 1995 in response to epidemic, systemic health disparities and inequities within the Aboriginal population across Ontario. They operate from a wholistic Aboriginal health framework which is often referred to by Aboriginal people as “the good life” or as restoring the “good mind”. The framework focuses on the restoration and rebalancing of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of Aboriginal people, families, communities and Nations, and understands “culture as treatment”.

Indigenous Cultural Safety training is underway for frontline hospital staff across 8 hospitals in SOAHAC’s region, Erie Shores Health Care, Windsor Regional Hospital,
and Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital. While initially focused on emergency department teams, a range of frontline health professionals across hospital departments are taking part. The training is designed to increase awareness, build knowledge, and encourage meaningful reflection, thereby supporting changes in practice that lead to more respectful, culturally safe care.

Together, these efforts help improve health care experiences and outcomes for Indigenous peoples.
