The Staff and Board of BANA would like to congratulate Sue McKinnon on receiving the Charles E. Brooks Labour Community Service Award from the United Way Windsor Essex and the Windsor and District Labour Council.

Presented in memory of Charles E. Brooks, this award is given annually to a trade unionist in recognition of outstanding contributions in the area of voluntary community service.

BANA was proud to have Sue as a member of our Board of Directors from 2007-2013. Never one to seek recognition, as a devoted worker at Caesars Windsor and a proud member of Local 444 Unifor, Sue has spent decades standing up for others: her coworkers, her community, and those whose voices are too often unheard. Her advocacy has helped improve lives, uplift vulnerable communities, and build bridges between the labour movement and the broader Windsor-Essex region.

Sue has always looked at service to others as a privilege, and it was our honour to be there as all of her extraordinary efforts towards creating a better community were acknowledged.

Thank you Sue McKinnon for all that you do.

For many people living with type 1 diabetes, the diagnosis comes suddenly and without warning. A child or adult may feel unwell for days or weeks, only to end up in the emergency room with a life-threatening condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). For families, it’s frightening, overwhelming, and life-changing. One Finger Prick Could Change Everything and the Windsor-Essex Community Health Centre is Leading the Way in Type 1 Diabetes Screening.

The concept of the “man card” is one of those cultural artifacts that you’d think we’d long buried, but it survives - mostly in jest, and it reflects something deeper: the policing of masculinity. This pressure to conform is not harmless and it comes from all genders. It reduces manhood to a checklist of clichés...and it's time we stop. "I was the fixer. If something needed mending, I fixed it. If someone needed calming, I swallowed my own storm... But somewhere between the chores and the compliments for being “so helpful,” I internalized that my worth was what I could do for others. "

In case you missed us this morning, BANA Registered Social Worker, Heather Leblanc joined Amy Dodge, host of CBC Windsor Morning (radio) and Kathleen Saylor (CBC Website) to talk about ARFID or Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.

ARFID has appeared in previous editions of the DSM as “Selective Eating Disorder”, “Feeding Disorder”, “Failure to Thrive”, or “feeding/eating disturbances”, and was typically directed towards children. Now, ARFID is more clearly outlined as its own diagnosis, and is being recognized in adolescents and adulthood; the diagnostic criteria is no longer age-specific. However, it cannot be denied that ARFID does occur more frequently within child populations.

Check out the audio of the radio show here: https://bana.ca/wp-content/uploads/CBC-Windsor-ARFID.mp3 or read the news story in the slides below.

Is recovery a choice? Not in the way most people think about it.

The first problem is that “recovery” itself is poorly defined. What does it mean to recover from an eating disorder? When you ask if one “chooses” recovery, it implies that recovery is a black and white concept, a linear process that one follows. Yet, we know that this is not true.
