Butcher’s Block Stretch: First off, who comes up with these names? 🤣 This is a great lat, inferior shoulder capsule and even a middle thoracic stretch if you have the mobility through the shoulders.

If these structures are very tight or restricted then keep your elbow out but move your hands in closer and perhaps start off with not flexing the elbows up as much. This will allow you to better ease into this as it is not meant to be a forced stretch. You should only apply mild over-pressure allowing tissues enough time to adapt to the load placed on them.

Let your shoulders blades come together towards your spine, gradually sinking down through the thoracic spine. DO NOT arch your lower back. This will only take the stretch off the areas you are trying to work on and add the stress into the joints of your lower back.

Do not do this if you have an active impingement in the shoulder without being assessed for other contributing causes! Even though tight lats can be a contributor, you might not be ready for this one yet!

Note: Poor mobility, stability and strength through the shoulders and middle back, will lead to problems with your neck! Something to consider when wondering why you have chronic neck pain or headaches.
