Colorectal Cancer Screening

Men and women between the ages of 50 to 74 should get screened for colorectal cancer with a F***l Occult Blood Test (FOBT) every two years. Men and women over 75 should continue to get regular check-ups and discuss with their family doctor or nurse practitioner whether they should continue to be screened for colorectal cancer. If a first degree relative (parent, siblin

g or child) had colorectal cancer you are at increased risk. Talk to your doctor about getting screened for colorectal cancer when you are 10 years younger than your relative was at the disease onset. Breast Cancer Screening

Women 50 – 74 years of age should get regular breast cancer screening with mammography every two years. Women 75 and over should continue to get regular checkups and discuss with their family doctor or nurse practitioner whether they should continue to be screened for breast cancer. Women between the ages of 30 and 69 and identified by a physician as high risk for breast cancer, should have yearly screening using both a mammogram and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Cervical Cancer Screening

All women who have ever had any s*xual skin-to-skin contact need to have regular Pap tests starting at age 21. This includes in*******se, intimate touching or oral s*xual contact with partners of either s*x. The current recommendation in Ontario is a Pap test every three years. Make the Pap test part of your regular health checkup until you are 70 years old. Pap tests can stop at age 70 if you have had three or more normal tests in the past 10 years. If you have had a hysterectomy, talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner to see if you still need a Pap test.

A $2.8 million provincial investment is helping connect over 5,600 people in the Sarnia-Lambton region to a primary care provider, improving access to care close to home.

This funding will support:
- Rapids Family Health Team , alongside Central Lambton Family Health Team, North Lambton Community Health Centre, and Twin Bridges Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic, connecting over 4,900 patients
- E-nangaabe-jig Health Services, supporting access for over 760 Indigenous community members, in partnership with Aamjiwnaang First Nation Administration and Council, Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point, and Walpole Island First Nation

Together, we’re continuing to build a more connected and inclusive system, ensuring people can access the care they need, when and where they need it.

Thank you to all partners, leaders, community members and MPP Bob Bailey whose collaboration continues to move this work forward.

✨Regional Cancer Program Highlights: Your Symptoms Matter✨

The Your Symptoms Matter (YSM) program gives patients a simple way to let their Care Team know how they’re feeling—both physically and emotionally—so they can better support symptom management and overall well-being.

For prostate cancer patients, the newly implemented EPIC (Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite) survey is now part of this process. This important questionnaire focuses on treatment-related urinary, bowel, s*xual, and hormonal symptoms—helping your care team improve your quality of life with care that’s tailored to you.

After completing YSM, you may also be invited to complete Your Voice Matters—a short patient experience survey that takes just a few minutes and helps improve the care experience for all patients.

🕒 Complete your survey up to 24 hours before your appointment

April 19-25th is National Volunteer Week, a time to celebrate and thank Canada’s 12.7 million incredible volunteers who give so generously of their time and hearts to support their communities. Volunteering is often seen as a selfless act — individuals share their time, skills, experience, and compassion to help others, without expecting anything in return.

In our Cancer Clinics across the region, our volunteers play a vital role in the patient and family experience. From offering a warm welcome at the front desk, to providing guidance, comfort, and a friendly face during what can be an overwhelming time, their presence makes a meaningful difference every day. Their kindness, dedication, and willingness to support others help create a more welcoming and supportive environment for patients, families, and care teams alike.

This National Volunteer Week, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to all of the volunteers for the impact they make and the care they provide. Please take a moment to thank a volunteer this week!
