❤️ Mindful Mondays: Heart Health Month ❤️

In recognition of Heart Health Month, here are practical, evidence-based ways to care for your heart—starting with knowing your risk.

🩺 Know Your Risk Heart disease risk is influenced by factors such as:

Blood pressure
Cholesterol levels
Diabetes
Smoking
Family history
Age and s*x

Your primary care team can help review your personal risk and recommend appropriate screening or follow-up.

🥗 Eat for a Healthy Heart
Choose vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds
Include lean proteins and healthy fats (like olive oil)
Limit highly processed foods, excess salt, and added sugars

🚶 Stay Physically Active
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week
Even small increases in movement support heart health

🚭 Avoid Smoking & Limit Alcohol
Not smoking significantly lowers heart disease risk
If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation

😴 Support Sleep & Manage Stress
Poor sleep and ongoing stress are linked to higher heart risk
Mindfulness, regular activity, and social support can help

February is Black History Month

A time to recognize and honour the history, contributions, and lived experiences of Black communities, past and present.

At Windsor Family Health Team, we acknowledge the vital role that Black individuals and families play in shaping our community. We also recognize that experiences of racism and inequity continue to impact health and well-being. As a primary care team, we are committed to providing care that is respectful, inclusive, and responsive to the diverse needs of our patients.

This month, and throughout the year, we remain dedicated to listening, learning, and working toward health care that is equitable, culturally safe, and grounded in dignity for everyone we serve.

We encourage our community to take time to reflect, learn, and celebrate Black history and excellence, today and every day.

Cannabis Poisoning in Children: What Parents & Caregivers Need to Know

Edibles and other cannabis products can look like candy or baked goods to children. Even small amounts can cause serious symptoms, including extreme sleepiness, confusion, vomiting, trouble breathing, or seizures.

Protect your child:
• Store cannabis locked, out of sight, and out of reach
• Keep products in original, child-resistant packaging
• Never use cannabis in front of children
• Avoid calling edibles “treats” or “candy”
• Talk with your child—at an age-appropriate level—about why cannabis is dangerous and not safe for kids

If a child may have consumed cannabis:
Call Poison Control Canada: 1-844-POISON-X (1-844-764-7669) or go to the nearest emergency department. If symptoms are severe, call 911.

Prevention starts with safe storage and honest conversations.

Attention Patients: Weekend Weather Advisory for Windsor, Ontario

The upcoming weekend in Windsor is expected to bring very cold temperatures, with daytime highs consistently below freezing and overnight lows dropping well below -15°C. Snow showers are also possible later in the weekend.

Tips to Stay Safe and Warm:

• Dress in warm layers with a wind-resistant outer layer, and make sure to cover exposed skin (hat, scarf, mittens/gloves, warm socks and waterproof boots).
• Stay dry and change out of wet clothing immediately, as moisture increases heat loss.
• Limit time outdoors if possible, especially during the coldest periods and when wind chill is significant.
• Check on elderly family members, neighbours, and those at higher risk of cold-related health concerns.
• In case of symptoms of hypothermia or frostbite — such as uncontrollable shivering, numbness, confusion, or pale skin — seek medical help promptly.

Track the Latest Weather Updates:

• Environment Canada Weather Forecast for Windsor:

Environment Canada's weather web site provides official weather warnings, current conditions, forecasts, and weather models, for public and marine areas in Canada. Canadian weather RADAR, tropical storm tracking, lightning activity, UV index, and AQHI index values also available.
