Today we recognize National Social Work Day and celebrate the important role our social worker Stephanie plays in long-term care.

This year’s theme, “Reflecting on Our Past, Reimagining Our Future,” is especially meaningful in long-term care. Social workers help honour the rich life stories of residents — their histories, relationships, cultures, and experiences — ensuring care remains deeply person-centered and grounded in dignity and respect.

At the same time, social workers help reimagine the future of long-term care. They advocate for residents’ rights, support families through complex transitions, address grief and mental health needs, and contribute to systems that are more compassionate, inclusive, and responsive.

In long-term care, social workers:
• Preserve and celebrate residents’ life stories
• Support emotional wellbeing and adjustment
• Help navigate complex family dynamics
• Advocate for ethical, resident-centered decision-making
• Contribute to policies and practices that improve care environments

Their work bridges generations, strengthens families, and helps ensure long-term care continues to evolve in ways that honour both history and hope.

Today we thank Stephanie for the compassion, advocacy, and leadership she brings to Salem Home every day.

Last week was National Dietitians Day in Canada, and we celebrated Jaclyn, our dedicated Registered Dietitian here at Salem Home.

Every day, Jaclyn plays a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our residents. As a Registered Dietitian, she provides accurate, timely, and individualized nutrition assessments and care plans, ensuring residents receive the nutrition they need to thrive. Jaclyn applies her deep knowledge of nutrition, dietetic science, and critical thinking to help improve the overall health of the people we serve.

She collaborates closely with our care teams, provides education, supports residents and families with nutritional guidance, and contributes to creating a safe, person centered food environment. Dietitians like Jaclyn are essential members of the health care team across Southern Health, helping communities make informed, healthy choices every day. [southernhealth.ca]
We extend our appreciation to Jaclyn for her compassion, expertise, and unwavering commitment to resident-centered nutrition at Salem Home.

In personal care homes, meaningful moments often happen in the quiet space between two people. A simple 1:1 visit offers more than conversation, it provides comfort, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

Our Therapeutic Recreation team creates these moments intentionally. Through individualized visits, they:

* build trust and emotional safety
* reduce loneliness and anxiety
* support cognitive and emotional wellness
* encourage self-expression and reminiscence
* help residents feel seen, heard, and valued

During these visits, we often see residents follow conversation through eye contact, nodding, and gestures, and remain engaged throughout the visit.

These connections may look small, but their impact is profound. When someone sits down, listens, and truly engages, it can brighten a day, ease a heart, and strengthen a sense of home.

Because everyone deserves to feel known 💕.
