Manitoba is eliminating sick notes! Government officials confirmed today that legislation will eliminate sick notes for any absences of 7 consecutive days or less. This will be the strongest standard in Canada. With over 600,000 sick notes requested per year in Manitoba, eliminating them will free up doctors to see more patients. This is good for patients, good for doctors, and good for Manitoba.

Thank you to the Manitoba government for listening to physicians and moving this forward.

More than a third of the time, patients no longer have any symptoms left when they see a doctor, which means sick notes aren’t a very effective way to verify absences. There are better ways to monitor and manage absences from work or school that don’t waste limited health care resources.
