🕯Hands up if you’re a 90’s kid who remembers the candle product MML parties so many moms were having back then, & who grew up with the belief that candles were essential to make your home have a warm & cozy vibe🙋🏻♀️
While scented candles definitely add to the ambiance of a space, they can also lead to exposure to harmful chemicals, & poor indoor air quality.
Whomp whomp, I know, it sucks, but hear me out!
Growing up with severe asthma, air quality and the sources of indoor air pollution were something my family & I had to learn. A large number of products, including ones that we bring into our homes every day, contain chemicals that can exacerbate asthma symptoms and trigger allergic reactions. Candles are one of these products.
Some of the chemicals in candles include VOCs, SVOCs, particulate matter, & endocrine-disrupting chemicals from synthetic fragrances such as galaxolide and phthalates.
The concerning thing with candles is, chemicals contained in them can be released even when they aren’t lit.
And once released, these chemicals don’t just go away… They settle in your household dust where they can remain for a long time. Research has detected phthalates and galaxolide in 100% of tested samples of house dust. 😳
Check out the last slide for suggestions on what to use instead of candles, and let me know below if you’re a candle loving household (no judgment!) or, like those in my DM’s, also avoid them.👃🏼
