The FDA did a study of illegal colored contact lenses sold without a prescription and 60% were contaminated with bacteria. Contact lenses are regulated medical products and the illegal sale of contact lenses could result in a $200,000 penalty and could even include jail time in the USA!

Contact lenses must be approved by the FDA or Health Canada and must be fit by licensed professionals. There is a high risk of blinding eye infections from non sterile lenses made from unsafe lens materials. Any contact lens that is purchased without a prescription and from an unlicensed retailer is illegal.

Drs. Sawatzky and Recksiedler attended the 2025 Invision Gala with many Optometry and Ophthalmology colleagues. This event supports the Misericordia Eye Care Centre of Excellence and helps many of our patients! It was a beautiful evening and the hardworking of Manitoban eyecare providers and the generosity of the sponsors is applauded!
