If you have children or teens who need a little help in navigating these difficult times, we may be able to help them.
At Mind Matters, we have found that teaching youth coping tools within the setting of a peer group is valuable. First, they are relieved to feel that they are not the 'only one' with problems. Second, they learn from each other - those who have tried tools that work share them. And finally, they support each other once they get to know each other.
We teach tools that are proven to be effective for people of all ages - Mindfulness and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. We give them home practice, so that you can see what they are doing (and hopefully support them); we reward them for practicing (so that they WANT to practice); and, they can see their progress over the six weeks.
Call Shelly at (204) 477-8555 to see if your child will benefit.

Kids Don't Come With Parenting Manuals - We Can Be Your Guide, and this is your key to the online sessions!

Parents of Toddlers - In these two sessions, we will challenge you to think about your 'parenting philosophy' and articulate a consistent philosophy amongst parents, which will guide the approach you take to parenting!

Parents of Children in the Middle School Years - In these two sessions we will discuss parenting models, and the types of parenting practices that work best with the child that you are challenged to raise.

Parents of Teens - If you have teens, you probably have already learned that parenting by reaction does not lead to anything but a whole lot of yelling!  Let's talk about the type of parent that you want to be, and the type of parenting style that will bring out the best in your little adult-to-be!

Before we posted about how important it is to use some of your break time off school or work by practicing mindfulness during your breaks! However, plenty of us are still not on our annual holiday break yet because we may be still in classes or working full-time. While it's important to use your break time to practice mindfulness, it's even more important to try to get into a daily habit of slowing down for even 10-20 minutes a day during busy times so that we prevent even further burnout and can stay productive!

So here is your daily reminder to SLOW DOWN! Do what you need to slow down for a bit for the day. Breathe deeply, meditate, unplug your phone for a bit. Grab a snack and drink some water, you got this!

While it’s great to indulge in being productive, taking a break to reward yourself is also more important than you may think to help you or your child stay disciplined and prevent burnout. Nobody is able to process or digest new information they are learning effectively if we do not stop to take breaks to routinely reward ourselves.
___

The more time spent doing this type of routine, the more automatic the process becomes. Which is why if rewards and incentives are inconsistent and do not have much follow through, it will be harder to have longer lasting effects.
___

So remember to establish a rewards routine using and feel free to use some of the examples we’ve outlined in the infographics in order to develop more healthy study habits!

Hi everyone! We put together a little infographic that we think will be helpful when thinking/talking about negative thinking patterns, recognizing them & how we can beat negative thinking!

These strategies are often something that we discuss in individual & group sessions - try keeping an eye out for these. If you see these and can "buck these trends", you might find yourself thinking positively more often!!

Last month we posted that university students were elligible for insurance coverage for mental health services. Dr. Cathy Moser gives a little bit more insight into who might be covered, how much you might be covered up to, and more!

Did daylight savings affect you or your kids?

The beginning and end of daylight saving time can cause sleep problems for parents and children alike. Younger children will get up earlier after falling back and teenagers will struggle after “springing forward.” Tired parents will lose either way. Making some modest changes to your child’s sleep schedule beforehand can help cushion the blow.
