National Indigenous Veterans Day is recognized annually in Canada on November 8 as an important day of remembrance that honours the contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit men and women who participated in Canada’s military efforts, serving in every conflict including the War of 1812, First World War, Second World War, the Korean War, and in Afghanistan. Indigenous Peoples have consistently defended Canada and fought for freedom and democracy abroad even while being denied these values at home. And upon their return to Canada, Indigenous veterans were also denied the same benefits and respect afforded to non-Indigenous veterans. This day acknowledges those injustices and commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by so many who fought for the rights and freedoms of others.
