Dr Joss Reimer for CMA

Dr Joss Reimer for CMA Dr Joss Reimer - Thank you MB for electing me as President-elect nominee of the Canadian Med Assoc I grew up wanting to make the world a better place.

Growing up in Winkler, in the home of a rural family doctor, I didn’t initially envision a future in medicine for myself. As a teenager and young adult, I spent time living in Switzerland, Ecuador, and Costa Rica studying language, political science, and international relations. But after all of those experiences, I was drawn back to medicine for a career. Having seen first hand the challenges of rural family medicine, my experiences in Canada and around the world also helped me to understand the incredible fulfillment that comes from making a positive impact in your community and the lives of each individual patient. Like most doctors, I went into medicine because I wanted to help people. But more than that I wanted to make the world a better place. I started residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University. I love the experience of delivering a baby, or helping end someone’s chronic pain, or being there for some of the best and worst moments of a person’s life. But while I love all of that, I found my true calling when I transferred into Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the University of Manitoba. I always say that while perhaps it sounds cheesy, I’m amazed every day that I am paid to literally try and make the world a better place. In public health I worked on cannabis legalization, created the naloxone distribution program, led disease outbreak responses, and acted as the Lead and Official Spokesperson for Manitoba’s most successful vaccination campaign in provincial history. Today, in my role as the Chief Medical Officer for the WRHA, this desire to make the world better guides my decision making every day. I want to help create a healthcare system that allows physicians to provide better care that is safe, accessible, effective, and equitable. And I want that care to be provided in collaborative teams that are diverse, engaged, passionate, and valued. It is this same passion that I will bring to the presidency of the CMA - a drive to empower physicians to find fulfilment in their work and to make the world better in their own ways.

Only 3 days left to vote: vote.cma.ca

I've visited 65 clinics in the last 3 weeks and I can tell you that physician burnout is very real. Docs are struggling and I want to be able to advocate for the supports they need.

I'm honoured that they trusted me to listen to their stories. Now I need your votes so I can take those stories to advocate, following past CMA presidents, for bold system changes that physicians need.

The CMA presidency doesn't return to Manitoba for 12 years. So don't miss this chance to have your say.

Dr. Sabrina Lee believes that diversity in medicine is life-saving. If the faces of doctors do not reflect the diversity of the population, we are likely missing critical perspectives that impact health outcomes.

Happy Resident Appreciation Week!
Resident physicians are a critical part of our healthcare system. They are often the doctors you meet when you need emergent care in the middle of the night or are being assessed for your surgery or even sometimes when need to see your family doctor to help with your high blood pressure.
Residency is a challenging time in any doctor's life. Your dedication to your learning, to your colleagues, and above all to your patients inspires me to be a better doctor.
For all the docs out there, you can send a thank you card to a resident here: https://doctorsmanitoba.ca/thankresidentdocs

The Crisis of Physician Burnout

What I’m hearing from colleagues throughout the health care system is that the largest challenge facing our profession is burnout. I am a public health physician and that is a powerful lens for seeing the world. But I am also a clinician, and in particular a clinician who has experienced burnout.

I want my colleagues and the public to see physician burnout as I do… as a public health crisis. By helping patients and governments understand the profound impact that burnout is having on our profession, we can help them understand that their health is interdependent with ours.

But action must follow understanding. We have solutions to manage burnout and more importantly to create work environments that prevent burnout from occurring in the first place. Solutions include many of the strategic pillars being promoted by the CMA to:
- invest in inter-professional teams
- reduce administrative burden and let physicians focus on caring for patients
- transform medical culture to prioritize wellness and promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in every aspect of our work and team
- embrace innovative and bold changes to health system policy, structure, and remuneration
- invest in expanded training programs that focus on excellence in education and student wellness
