You’ve made the decision to transition your little one to a bed. Now what?⁣

PRO TIP // before we dive in, take your time creating a game plan that you’re comfortable with and that is developmentally appropriate for your kiddo. ⁣

Ok, so preparing your child for this big change is just as important as setting up his new bed and safety proofing his room.⁣

Think about these tips below before you make the change!⁣

💛 This can be such an exciting time and you can definitely involve your kiddo in the process of setting up their room, but I actually recommend not getting them super hyped up. ⁣

Why? Because it can set them up for feelings of failure if they don’t stay in their bed until morning. In the majority of families, this process is not linear so maintaining a calm neutral attitude is helpful for everyone. Remember that this will likely be a marathon and not a sprint!⁣

🌙 Use a toddler clock or stop/go clock and provide clear and simple instructions so she knows what her job is and what your expectations are. ⁣

💫 Create a bedtime routine picture chart and put it in their room where they can see it. This provides visuals for your child and helps keep the routine moving along. Once the last item on the chart is complete, this will help cue your child for sleep. ⁣

There is so much more to flesh out here - tell me what you’d like more info or specifics on! I’m here to help 😉⁣

“HEY BABE! BABE!? DID YOU SWITCH THE LAUNDRY OVER?!”(as I rip open a bag of oreos)⁣

😁 Our son had a sleepover last night and I’m enjoying my hot coffee before my husband picks him up.⁣

May your coffee also be hot today and your Monday be short! ⁣

I LOVE a good nap time.⁣

Not for me personally. ⁣
But when my son naps niiiiice and long👌🏻⁣

Fill in the blank.⁣

When my child naps I like to ____________ .⁣

I’ll go first.⁣

I like to bake, sip on something warm, and listen to a podcast. Or do absolutely nothing.⁣

Your turn! ⁣

🌙In a phone conversation I had with a family this week, Mom said at the beginning that she was worried about her daughter crying. ⁣

✨The truth is, as a sleep consultant, I don’t want parents or their child to have to endure any duration of crying. Why? Because it’s hard for everyone. That’s why we do so much to minimize crying. ⁣

💫We cannot force a child to sleep. No matter how hard we try. Crying happens because change is hard. Crying also happens when falling asleep isn’t coming easy. The good news is that there is a reason for that. It’s my job to help you figure out what that is and how to fix it! ⁣

⭐️Timing, environment, routine - those three factors are so important to get right when also deciding how we respond. ⁣

💛YOU choose how you want to respond to your baby, and I'll be there to support you. How you choose to respond is important because consistency is important. Consistent responses = comfort and predictability for your child. ⁣

🌙So, how did this family’s journey go? Zoe cried for 20 minutes the first night, 12 minutes the second night, 13 minutes the third night, and 6 minutes the fourth night, and then there was pretty much no more crying. ⁣

We have a few days left in our 2 weeks and she happily welcomes sleep at bedtime now. ⁣

She needed to learn a different way to fall asleep independently in place of the bottle! And she did! ⁣

Now Zoe, Mom, and Dad are all getting uninterrupted nights of sleep. It doesn’t get any better than that!

YOUR BABY IS SPECIAL TO YOU.💛

Regardless of:⁣

• how you navigate their sleep⁣
• how you parent⁣
• how you feed them⁣
• how you dress them⁣
• how many hours you’re with them in a day⁣

It can get really noisy listening to the opinions of others, and we are all doing the best we can with what we’ve got. ⁣

One thing is for sure, your baby is special to you. ⁣

Delight in them. Enjoy those moments of genuine connection with each other. That’s what it’s all about.⁣

Cue the panic. If you’re like me, stop and take a breath. ⁣

If you’re watching your babe on the video monitor, how did they react when the lovey was tossed over? Base your response on that. ⁣

Few babies will just forget about it, lay down and go to sleep. After all, a lovey is meant to bring comfort and can be a helpful tool for sleep. ⁣

In most cases, our babies will look around, look at the lovey on the ground, and realize they can’t get to it. They may call out for us and get upset and cry. They may decide they’d like to practice a bit more, and now everything is out of the crib 😅⁣

🥱 Sleep isn’t happening. ⁣

⁉️ What do we do to stop crib-tossing from turning into a game⁉️⁣

🔹Reduce the number of loveys or stuffies in the crib to 1. Toddlers LOVE opportunities for autonomy - let them choose which lovey they’d like to sleep with. ⁣

🔹Give your baby a pass the first time - go into the room, place the lovey back in the crib, and take your leave! This reinforces that it’s time to sleep and not time to play. If they throw the lovey out again, don’t go back in to replace it until they’ve fallen asleep (at night). If this happens during nap, I suggest we don’t go back in until nap time is over. ⁣

🔹Provide plenty of opportunities during wake time to practice this new skill - your baby wants to see what happens when different items are dropped or thrown to the floor. Make a game out of it - Let them practice for as long as they want! ⁣

Is your kiddo a crib-tosser? Tell me more!⁣

*Following the AAP guidelines, we recommend introducing a lovey at 12 months of age.⁣

✨ EARLY BEDTIMES - THEY AREN’T FOREVER ✨⁣

Early bedtimes are one of the recommendations you hear me make over and over again. ⁣

Is the thought of an earlier bedtime what’s holding you back from making changes to your baby’s sleep because it doesn’t work for your family’s schedule?⁣

I absolutely get it, and understand why it’s holding you back. ⁣

You wonder if it will actually work. ⁣

If you have been struggling with your child’s sleep for a while, and can’t chalk it up to developmental progressions, teething, or nap transitions, chances are your child is overtired.⁣

You know your baby best and you know when things aren’t going well. If you have a hunch that there are bigger issues going on, try an earlier bedtime for just a few weeks and see what happens.⁣

How much earlier? Try 30 minutes to start. Bedtime can be as early as 5:30 p.m. for some kiddos!

✨ GREAT EXPECTATIONS - NAP EDITION 😴⁣

When my son was finally napping consistently in his crib, I would go full tilt trying to get as much done around the house as I possibly could, all the while working to quiet the anxious thoughts I was having around him napping well. ⁣

Playing out each scenario in my head to help me decide what I should do next to be the most productive with my time.⁣

Multitasking at its finest 🙄⁣

Our to-do lists are never ending, and more often than not, the item that doesn’t always get checked off the list is taking care of us.

I work hard to prioritize my self care since having my son, which includes constantly pushing past those feelings of guilt and shame that can often accompany our desire to take care of our own needs while we raise our families. ⁣

Self-care for me is having time alone to recharge where I can focus on my needs and no one else’s, it’s drinking a hot cup of coffee from start to finish, it’s being in the kitchen watching reality TV while making a meal, by myself. These things help me be the best version of myself.

What is your favourite thing to do for yourself?⁣

On the days when our babies are napping, it’s okay to do something that makes us feel good. The to-do list can wait. ⁣
