WHAT IS A CROWN MADE FROM?

Crowns are made from several types of materials. Metal alloys, ceramics, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or composite resin. When a crown is made, the material often is colored to blend in with your natural teeth.

To decide which material to use for your crown, we will consider many factors, such as:

- the tooth’s location and function
- the position of the gum tissue
- your preference
- the amount of tooth that shows when you smile
- the color or shade of the tooth

STEPS IN MAKING A CROWN:

It usually takes 2 dental visits to complete the treatment. When a crown is placed over a natural tooth, several steps are involved:

1) The dentist prepares the tooth by creating room for the crown to fit. Any decay is also removed and additional tooth structure needed to support the crown is added.

2) An impression is made to provide an exact model for the crown. The impression can be made from a mold or by digitally scanning the tooth.

3) A temporary crown is placed while you wait for the permanent crown to be ready. This usually takes less than 1 week.

4) When the new crown is ready, it is tried in the mouth. When you and the dentist are happy with how it looks and feels, the crown is cemented into place.

WHAT NOW?

Like natural teeth, crowns can break. And, the tooth under the crown can still get cavities. To prevent cavities or damage to your crown:

- Brush your teeth twice a day and clean between your teeth every day.

- Avoid chewing abnormally hard foods, ice, or other hard objects, especially if you have tooth-colored crowns.

- Be sure to see us for regular exams and professional teeth cleanings.

Teeth grinding or clenching, also known as bruxism, is pretty common and can be painful and destructive to teeth. Some signs you may be a teeth-grinder are waking up with dull headaches, jaw soreness, face pain, and fatigue since it can disrupt sleep. In some cases people may not be aware of a grinding habit and its the bedroom partner who actually notices it.

Occasional bruxism may not cause any real concerns, but when it’s done regularly over time, it can cause broken teeth, loss of tooth enamel, and in severe cases, loss of teeth.

The exact cause of bruxism is unknown, but it’s believed that stress and anxiety play the biggest role. Other causes may also be alcohol use, ci******es, caffeine, sleep apnea, snoring, an abnormal bite, and crooked teeth. Most cases of bruxism can easily be treated by wearing a night guard while you sleep. Night guards are also known as dental guards, mouth guards, nocturnal bite plates, or bite splints.

A Night guard works by putting a barrier between your teeth. When you clench your jaw, the night guard helps to lighten the tension and give cushion to the muscles in the jaw. This cushioning not only helps to prevent face and jaw pain, but also protects the enamel of your teeth.

If you think you or a loved one may have a grinding habit please ---->

Brushing your teeth is the foundation of good oral care and prevention. Patients often ask us what's the best toothbrush to use and is an electric toothbrush better than a manual toothbrush?

Truth is, when used with proper technique both electric and manual toothbrushes can be equally effective at removing oral plaque that causes decay and disease. However, studies have shown that on average, using an electric toothbrush is more advantageous in maintaining good oral health for the following reasons:

1) In general, electric toothbrushes remove more plaque and are more effective at preventing gingivitis than manual toothbrushes.

2) Easier to use for people with limited mobility

3) A timer built into an electric toothbrush can help you brush your teeth long enough to sufficiently remove plaque from your teeth and gums.

4) May cause less waste

5) May improve your focus while brushing

6) May improve oral health in people with orthodontic appliances

7) Fun for kids - can help accomplish good oral cleaning and set healthy habits

8) Safe for gums - have pressure indicators helping to avoid excessive brushing
