Leo on ADLs - Mobility + Safety
On his third day of orientation, Leo realized that mobility and safety were at the heart of being a healthcare aide. During morning rounds, his mentor reminded him, “Every safe move protects a patient’s dignity — and their life.”
Leo learned how positioning keeps patients comfortable and prevents skin breakdown. He practiced following turning schedules, understanding that regular repositioning could prevent complications and pain. At first, remembering times and techniques felt overwhelming, but he saw how much difference it made for patients who couldn’t move on their own.
During skills lab, Leo practiced transfer techniques, learning how to protect both the patient and his own body. In the two-person assist simulation, he worked with a partner to safely move a patient from bed to chair. Communication was key — counting together, moving slowly, and checking how the patient felt.
He was introduced to mechanical lifts, learning that using equipment properly was safer than trying to lift manually. It wasn’t about strength — it was about safety and teamwork.
Later, the class discussed fall risk awareness. They reviewed scenarios where small details — like clutter, poor footwear, or rushing — could lead to serious injuries.
By the end of the day, Leo understood that safe mobility isn’t just a task. It’s prevention, protection, and respect for every patient’s well-being.
