Prelinguistic skills aka the foundation of communication needs to be mastered before children can talk. Many parents focus on expressive words but there is much more to communication then just talking. Once the foundation has been developed and receptive language has improved, functional skills like requesting and labelling can be targeted. I like to focus on everyday words “mom, dad, help, car, no, yes, eat, apple, cookie, done” before working on academic skills like colours, alphabet, shapes, letters and numbers. I have seen many children who are able to count and say the alphabet but they do not know how to request, express their needs or even say “mama/dada”. Both the child and parent are frustrated and it makes sense why they would be feeling that way.

So many signs of language disorders in preschoolers but a big one is that they cannot answer questions and have conversations with you. They may talk and have vocabulary but the quality of their communication is off and skills are scattered. See a speech-language pathologist if you’re concerned. Early intervention makes a huge difference and many times we can work on goals to fill in the gaps so they no longer have disordered language or at least make significant improvements. I love working with children with language disorders...their progress can be amazing when parents target goals at home.
There is no wait list if you live in Winnipeg too.
