As a former athlete myself, I also went through a lot of struggles with trying to balance everything from school to work while playing sports - always striving to be perfect. I now wish I didn’t try to hide as much as I did.
That’s why I felt like I wanted to help my athletes not only with their physical injuries, but offer them a safe space to reach out especially when things become too much to handle all by themselves.
Now, as a disclaimer, I am not trying to be your therapist nor giving any advice outside of my scope of practice. There are amazing Therapists out there who specialize and offer that type of help, and I encourage each and every one of you to seek it if you never have, because it’s honestly a game changer!
My purpose in these « wellness checks » is to simply be a safe space for athletes to talk about whatever it is that’s bothering them and not be afraid of there being repercussions on their playing time.
Athletes can be so afraid to mention they’re hurt, and playing while injured just adds more to the healing process. The last thing I want are athletes not coming to me for injuries, playing through them and risking hurting themselves even more.
So, to build trust and a good relationship between athlete and Athletic Therapist will go a long way in the success of your rehab process!
Admitting you’re struggling is not a sign of weakness, and does not define who you are as a player.
I hope this small gesture helps someone along the way. Athlete mental health matters! 🤍🧠
