The Good Food Club works to empower people to eat healthier, gain new skills and create community in the West Broadway neighbourhood of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada The Good Food Club is a Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada based food security program that works to empower people to eat healthier, gain new skills and create community. The GFC was created through direct community engagement, GFC continues to respond to the interests and needs of its members. From field to table, Good Food Club members have the opportunity to become involved with their own food security. Through farm trips, members learn to grow their own food while helping a local farm supply GFC’s farmers market. In both the summer and winter markets, volunteer members help supply affordable vegetables, fruit, meat and cheese to the local community. Cooking classes help members turn market items into healthy delights for their families. Workshops offer development of skills, such as canning, bread making, food safety, and first aid. Our children’s programming invites kids to participate in their own food security. Members who are involved in the Good Food Club gain skills that not only improve their quality of life, but also their ’employability.’ GFC’s volunteer rewards program gives volunteers “sweat points” which they can redeem for healthy foods. Many people have been helped through hard times by working with GFC. Most importantly, members are delighted to have an opportunity to give back to their community. The Good Food Club creates connections alongside shared social responsibility. Come to a farmers market and you will see people from diverse backgrounds sharing, talking and working alongside each other. You will also see people committed to bettering their neighbourhood. GFC programs facilitate social connections and the culture of giving back. Within the last 3 years, membership has tripled to over 1100, and participation in our events has more than doubled.
