“Eight years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. Data at the time showed that I shouldn’t be here right now but after chemotherapy and radiation treatments, I have had a clean bill of health for four years. When I sense that patients are feeling stress, I tell them my story. I am proof that you can get through this.”

Inside each treatment room in the Radiation Therapy Department at CancerCare Manitoba sits a large, highly advanced machine (called a linear accelerator). The device is most commonly used to deliver external beam radiation treatments to patients with cancer, a responsibility that requires the specialized skills and training of a radiation therapist to precisely pinpoint and treat the location of cancer cells inside a patient’s body.

For more than 30 years, Brian Holmes has been a radiation therapist at CancerCare Manitoba, supporting and caring for cancer patients throughout their journey through radiation treatment.

“At the beginning of treatments, radiation often sounds scary to patients,” said Holmes. “The majority of people I see associate it with devastating world events like Hiroshima and Chernobyl, but medical radiation therapy is one of the most effective treatments of cancer.”

Radiation therapy uses high doses of ionized radiation to shrink and kill cancer cells while protecting nearby healthy tissue as much as possible.

“It’s an option for almost any cancer from the top of your head to the tip of your toes,” said Holmes.

Today, Feb. 4, we recognize World Cancer Day as an opportunity to raise awareness for the prevention and treatment of cancer of all types and recognize the health care teams at CancerCare Manitoba that work closely with all regional health authorities to contribute to the delivery of quality patient care and improved outcomes.

This week is National Burn Awareness Week and we're joining Shared Health in celebrating the diverse and highly specialized skills of HSC's Occupational Therapists. Thank you for all the work you do!

Ben Badgero is a jack-of-all-trades. With a passion for burn therapy and a knack for harnessing the power of 3-dimensional printing, he’s revolutionizing the field of burn care, one custom device at a time.

Burns require specialized care in the first 12-18 months as the skin heals and steps are taken to prevent or treat scarring. As an occupational therapist and one of two Burn Clinical Specialists at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg (HSC), Badgero works with patients to manage scarring and improve the damaged skin’s overall look.

Typically this care involves the use of pressure garments, tight clothing that applies therapeutic pressure to the skin. The garments are customized to each burn survivor, a process that can be long and difficult, particularly for patients with facial burns.

“With facial burns, we often use a hard mask to provide the pressure. The traditional method of making one is a bit like getting a dental impression,” explained Badgero. “It involves plaster and a goo-like substance being poured onto the patient’s face, which can make individuals feel claustrophobic, especially when it must stay in place for an hour or more.”

Badgero saw an opportunity to improve patient comfort and care through the use of 3D printing technology.

“We now scan the person’s face to get the 3D replica and the patient can go home while the printing machine takes over,” said Badgero. “What was previously a long and technically difficult process for both the patient and the therapist now takes around 15-20 seconds.”

This week is National Burn Awareness Week and we're celebrating the diverse and highly specialized skills of HSC's Occupational Therapists.

Social prescribing is a way to help older adults live well and age safely in their homes and communities. It recognizes that health is more than just medical care – it's also about staying active, eating well, having social connections, and feeling supported in daily life.

As winter settles in, remember to take it slow, stay alert, and drive to road conditions. Keep these safety tips in mind all winter long:

- Plan ahead and give yourself extra time. Winter weather can cause delays.
- Check road conditions before you go. Monitor Manitoba 5-1-1 for real-time updates. https://www.manitoba511.ca/
- Stay visible. Use headlights in low light or blowing snow, even during the day.
- Equip your vehicle for winter. Use winter tires and clear all snow and ice from windows, mirrors and lights.
- Pack an emergency kit. Include blankets, a shovel, booster cables, a flashlight, extra warm clothing, snacks and a phone charger.
- Avoid sudden movements. Accelerate, brake and steer gently to maintain traction on icy roads.
- Make a safe ride home part of your plans.

Visit Transport Canada’s website for more winter driving tips: https://tc.canada.ca/en/road-transportation/stay-safe-when-driving/winter-driving/driving-safely-winter

-
