February 14th is often framed as a day for romantic love – but the truth is, love comes in many forms, and one of the most powerful for our mental health is friendship.

Research shows that strong social connections – including friendships – are linked to better mental health and even longer life. In fact:

💛 People with stronger social relationships are up to 50 % more likely to survive longer compared to those with weaker connections. Strong social bonds have also been shown to reduce the risk of premature death – equivalent to the health risks of smoking 15 ci******es a day.
💛 Having trusted friends to talk to is associated with lower rates of anxiety and depression, and can act as an emotional buffer against stress.
💛 Close friendships help regulate stress, reduce loneliness, and support overall emotional well-being.

So today – whether you’re celebrating Galentine’s Day, cherishing platonic love, or nurturing your closest friendships – take a moment to appreciate the people who show up for you, share a laugh, and remind you that you’re not alone.

Love isn’t just romantic – it’s connection, care, support, and community. 💛

It’s the final day of our Community Match Challenge.

This week, we’ve been asking Manitobans to be the match — not with one big cheque, but with a wave of everyday people saying: “I’ve got your back.”

If you’ve been thinking about giving, this is your moment to step in before the week wraps up.

Your gift helps keep MDAM’s peer support lines and peer groups free and accessible all winter long.

Your cup has boundaries

A full cup isn’t about doing more — it’s about leaking less.

Protecting your energy, saying no when needed, and choosing who gets access to you are all ways of refilling.

This Friday reminder: boundaries aren’t walls. They’re the rim that keeps your cup from spilling.

💛 Family & Friends Workshop 💛

When someone you care about is living with a mood disorder, it can be hard to know how to help. You may feel confused, overwhelmed, or unsure of what to say — and that’s okay. You’re not alone.

Our Family & Friends Workshop is designed to support those who are walking alongside a loved one on their mental health journey. This group offers:

✨ Education about mood disorders
✨ Tools for supportive communication
✨ Strategies for setting healthy boundaries
✨ A safe space to ask questions and connect with others

Supporting someone else starts with feeling supported yourself.

Thoughtful Thursday 🤍

“The right connections don’t require you to shrink, brace, or perform — they allow you to be.”

Not all connection supports our wellbeing in the same way.
Some spaces ask us to stay guarded. Others invite us to soften and show up as ourselves.

Today’s reflection:

Who do you feel safest being real with?

Who listens without rushing, respects your boundaries, and meets you with care?

Those are the connections worth tending.

Look at what this community has already made possible. 💙

Thanks to our generous donors, we’ve made incredible progress by almost doubling the funds raised since our last update. Every gift is a powerful vote for connection, care, and the belief that no one should struggle alone.

At a time when many are feeling stretched, this generosity means so much. We’re deeply grateful to everyone who has stepped up to support this work.

If you’ve been thinking about giving to the We’ve Got Your Back campaign, there’s still time. Every contribution helps strengthen peer support, education, and community care across Manitoba.

Thank you for standing with us. 💙

Focus: University of Hildesheim Research Visual: A mirror-themed graphic or a silhouette that looks like it is "stepping into" its own light.

Have you ever felt like you weren't being your "true self"? 🌿

Research from the University of Hildesheim suggests that acting in ways that align with our authentic self can significantly increase our emotional well-being. We all carry a self-concept—our sense of who we are. Sometimes that concept gets challenged, such as when we see ourselves as kind but are perceived by others as distant.

Rather than avoiding these uncomfortable moments, research suggests that acknowledging them can help us reflect, grow, and develop a more resilient sense of self. Accepting that we are all imperfect—and always learning—can reduce inner conflict and help us feel more grounded in who we are.

Low-pressure connection still counts

Not every connection needs deep conversation or big emotional energy.

Sometimes wellness looks like:
• sitting beside someone
• sending a meme
• sharing a quiet moment
• knowing you don’t have to explain yourself

Low-pressure connection is still connection — and it still supports mental health.

This February, let connection be gentle.

February is Psychology Month, as recognized by the Canadian Psychological Association. It’s a time to highlight the science of psychology—and more importantly, the people it serves. 🧠💙

Psychology seeks to understand human behavior and mental processes, a curiosity that has shaped human thinking for centuries. While it began as part of philosophy, psychology emerged as its own scientific field in the mid-19th century. Psychiatry, as a medical specialty, has an even longer history focused on biological approaches to mental health.

Over time, many theories have been tested, challenged, and refined. Today, psychology continues to evolve—offering new insights into how we understand ourselves and support mental well-being. Throughout February, we’ll be sharing some of that research with you, translated into what it can mean for your everyday life.

Support doesn’t always look like a big group or a perfect system.

Sometimes it’s:
• one person who checks in
• a peer who understands without explaining
• a space where you don’t have to perform “being okay”

This month, we’re inviting you to rethink what connection can look like — and to let go of the idea that support has to follow a single script.

Your support network gets to be shaped by your needs, not expectations.

That’s connection, on your terms.

This week was originally set aside for a corporate matching challenge. While that lead donor didn't come through, the need in our community remains. So, we’re pivoting. We’re asking YOU to be the match for your neighbors.

Our goal: 50 new donations this week to keep our peer support lines running 9am-9pm, 7 days a week. We don't need one big check—we need 50 Manitobans who say, "I've got your back."

🌾 This Week at MDAM – Prairie Mountain 🌾
February 9–13

We’re heading into another week of connection, support, and community across the Prairie Mountain region.

We’ll begin on Monday with virtual spaces for those looking to check in or connect through One-on-One Chats and Wellness Peer Support. These sessions offer a supportive place to talk, listen, and feel less alone.

On Tuesday, we’ll be gathering Soul Sisters in a hybrid format, welcoming participants both in-person and online. We’ll also be hosting our Men’s Group, creating space for meaningful conversation and support.

Midweek brings us back together on Wednesday with Tea & Tales in Minnedosa, along with additional One-on-One Chat time for anyone who would like individual support.

Thursday offers a chance to slow down and connect during Coffee Talk, and we’ll wrap up the week on Friday with Tea & Tales at Rotary Villas, alongside more opportunities for One-on-One Chats.

We look forward to sharing another week with you.
