After over a decade of consultation and advocacy, construction on a new healing space designed for Indigenous children and their families at HSC Children’s Hospital is set to begin. The project will have space for traditional Indigenous ceremonies and serve as a place for Elders, healers and Knowledge Keepers.

This is an important step toward meaningfully incorporating Indigenous Knowledge Systems and ceremonies into Manitoba’s health care system – but it is also long overdue.

More spaces of this kind are needed and efforts to develop them must not face the same institutional barriers that prevented this project from being realized for so many years.

We rallied at City Hall this morning to defend the right to protest in Winnipeg. MHC board and committee members joined the rally to show our solidarity and oppose the council’s attempt to restrict our democratic right to protest.

As the President of the Winnipeg Labour Council Melissa Dvorak said, “This bylaw isn’t about safety, it’s about control.”

We didn’t just rally yesterday, we lobbied MPs across Parliament hill. My team met with three Manitoban MPs: Colin Reynolds (Conservative Party; Elmwood-Transcona), Grant Jackson (Conservative Party; Brandon-Souris), and Ginette Lavack (Liberal; St. Boniface-St. Vital).

We discussed enforcing the Canada Health Act, maintaining and strengthening federal health transfers to the provinces, finishing the job on a national, universal Pharmacare program, and the importance of listening to front line workers more when developing health policy.

Glad to be here in Ottawa with hundreds of other health care advocates for the Canadian Health Coalition's Lobby events. We’ve come from coast to coast to deliver the federal government a simple message: protect universal health care. Enforce the Canada Health Act. Finish the job on Pharmacare across the country. Listen to health care workers on the frontlines.

Our public health care systems across the country need increased investment, not more cuts or privatization.

Thanks to CCPA MB for inviting me to join their panel “Tackling the Polycrisis: Beyond a Balanced Budget in Manitoba.”

It was a privilege to join with other local experts to discuss how we can invest in health care, climate action, reducing inequality, and rebuilding the civil service to make lives better for all Manitobans.

Great work to my fellow panelists Hafiz Jatto, Kyle Ross and Laura Cameron, and to our keynote speaker, Jesse Hajer.

MHC is glad to see the province step in and keep Golden Door Getiatric Centre open for the seniors who call it home.

Moving a for-profit personal care home into the public system is good news for our provincial capacity to offer long term care to Manitobans and for the residents of Golden Deer in particular. This is an approach we hope to see expanded to other private, for-profit care homes in Manitoba.

Investing more in the public delivery of long term care is cost effective and provides a higher quality of care to patients while avoiding the uncertainty and profit motive that comes along with private, for-profit delivery.
