Yesterday’s holiday celebration at the Caboto Centre was such a vibe.

Huge thank you to everyone who came out between 2 and 4 p.m. to relax, catch up, and enjoy some holiday treats together. The work you do every day is heavy, and you still show up with compassion and heart for Manitoba’s seniors. That deserves to be celebrated.

We are so grateful for this community. Wishing you all a calm, cozy, joy filled holiday season.
Check out a few snaps from yesterday.

What does it take for a leader to risk everything to protect the people in their care?

That is the ethical dilemma Executive Director Gilles Verrier of Lions Housing Centres has faced. Faced with impossible choices — underfunding, broken promises, and bureaucratic blockades — Gilles chose the path of advocacy, refusing to remain silent while seniors suffer.

For six months, Lions warned WRHA and the Minister of Health that financial realities were making it impossible to admit new residents. Relief could have been offered. Solutions were presented. Instead, leadership dismissed the truth with a single refrain: “We have no money, and you need to start admitting.”

Gilles did what few are willing to do: he put his neck on the line in speaking up to the Minister and WRHA. He exposed the systemic failures that left 18 beds empty while hundreds of Manitobans wait in hospitals or at home for care. He called out inequities that cripple PCHs, such as unfulfilled reimbursement promises from Shared Health for infrastructure repairs. And, he challenged leadership for blocking staffing solutions that could have saved half a million dollars and sustained care.

This is not just administration. This is negligence. This is an ethical breach.

And yet, despite being stonewalled, Gilles has announced Lions will begin admitting again — because seniors cannot wait any longer. That is courage. That is advocacy.

“We will not be silent. Manitobans deserve accountability, not excuses.”

We honour Gilles for taking this stand. He has exposed what others ignore: a government and regional leadership willing to sacrifice seniors’ care rather than confront their own failures. His voice is not only for Lions — it is for every Manitoban who deserves dignity, safety, and truth in care.
