TODAY❗

MLPD is concerned that Bill 5 would further delay meaningful progress towards making Manitoba a more accessible province. We encourage our community to sign up to speak tonight. You can present in person, on Zoom, or you can send a written submission.

Here is more information from our partners Barrier-Free Manitoba:

Bill 5 – Accessibility for Manitobans Act Amendments: What You Need to Know

Barrier-Free Manitoba learned this morning that the Manitoba government introduced Bill 5, which proposes changes to the Accessibility for Manitobans Act, in the legislature yesterday.

Barrier-Free Manitoba participated in some discussions leading up to this bill. While we are pleased to see a few positive changes reflected, many of the recommendations we brought forward—particularly those related to accountability, transparency, and timelines—were not included.

We remain concerned that, as written, Bill 5 will not significantly accelerate progress toward accessibility in Manitoba, and in some areas may slow it down.

You can read Bill 5 here:

Have your voice heard
Bill 5 will be going to committee TODAY (March 18th at 6 p.m.), where Manitobans have the opportunity to:
• Present in person or virtually
• Submit a written brief
This is an important opportunity for people with disabilities, their families, service providers, and allies to speak directly with decision-makers about what needs to change.

Register to participate:

Barrier-Free Manitoba will be presenting to the committee to share our concerns and recommendations for strengthening the bill.

Accessibility is a human right—and legislation must do more than signal intent. It must lead to real, measurable change.

If accessibility matters to you, now is the time to speak up!

Monday! Join MLPD at the Manitoba Health Coalition - MHC rally. Don’t let them destroy public health care in Canada!

Join us for a rally at the Union Centre at noon on March 16th as part of a national day of action to oppose the privatization of health care underway in Alberta.

Danielle Smith’s government is trying to bring down public health care - not just in Alberta, but across the country. Her plan is extremely dangerous. It is a full-on health care privatization plan. It brings in two-tier health care -- allowing doctors to charge patients user fees and the wealthy to jump the queue pushing everyone else back. It expressly brings in private for-profit health insurance which is currently banned. That throws the doors wide open to the powerful U.S. for-profit insurance industry.

Medical bills are a leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States, and globally, countries with more health care privatization see higher mortality rates. Privatizing health care doesn’t mean more choice, or shorter wait times. It means less services and longer waits for the majority, while the few can be seen faster - not based on medical need, but because they can afford to pay to jump the line.

What’s happening in Alberta threatens public health care here in Manitoba and all across Canada. It undermines principles of universality and accessibility that are core to the Canada Health Act and will spread if we don’t fight back.

The Alberta Friends of Medicare warn, "This is unequivocally the biggest threat to our single-payer, universal Medicare system we've ever seen. Not just for Albertans, but for all Canadians."

Join us to say no to private, two-tier health care.
