Sharing on behalf of Occupational Health Centre

Join Us for a Free Session on May 12, 10 am - 12 noon (CST)

Learn and Connect: A Webinar and Peer Support Session for Injured and Ill Workers and Their Allies

Join us for a two-part online session designed to inform, connect, and support injured and ill workers and their allies โ€” including those who work alongside or advocate for them.

Part 1 โ€“ Educational Webinar - Exploring Self-Advocacy - presented by Erin Lyle, B.Ed., Advocate, Community Unemployed Help Centre (First Hour)

Have you ever wondered how to speak up for yourself or wished you felt more confident doing it? Self-advocacy can be especially important for workers who are injured or ill, and are trying to navigate recovery, work, or systems of support.
Join us for a relaxed, guided conversation about self-advocacy, for injured and ill workers, as well as allies, supporters, and anyone interested in learning more.

Weโ€™ll talk about:
- What self-advocacy means
- How people experience it in different situations
- Simple ways to speak up for your needs
- How allies and supporters can help
- What can lead to better outcomes

This is a safe and welcoming space to learn, ask questions, and share your experiences - if youโ€™d like to. We hope you can join us.

Part 2 โ€“ Peer Support & Dialogue (Second Hour)
Following the presentation, all are welcome to stay for an open peer support and dialogue session โ€” a community space for injured and ill workers and their allies to come together for reflection, connection, and shared support.

Participants may attend either part or both, depending on their interests.

For more information and to regsiter, connect with Lisa Houtkooper, Occupational Health Nurse: lhoutkooper@ohcmb.ca

We look forward to learning and connecting with you!

Accessibility doesnโ€™t stop at the sidewalk.

The Government of Manitoba is continuing their work on an accessibility standard focused only on outdoor spaces. That matters, but itโ€™s not enough.

Right now, you have a chance to shape whatโ€™s being developed.

The Manitoba Accessibility Office is asking for input on accessible outdoor spaces including sidewalks, crossings, trails, play areas, and more.

Last month we hosted a zine making workshop! We wanted to collect stories from our community on the experiences of people with disabilities finding and maintaining accessible housing.

Zines are creative DIY booklets that have historically provided an opportunity to explore difficult topics, provide an opportunity to challenge the status quo, and imagine new ways of doing things. Zines are often used as an accessible format for storytelling in disability/mad studies and disability movement organizing.

This workshop was small and sweet, so we only advertised to our newsletter members. Want to have first access to registration for events like this? Sign up to receive our newsletter: https://mlpd.nationbuilder.com/newsletter

This project is supported by the Canadian Centre for Housing Rights (CCHR) with funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) โ€“ Race, Gender, and Diversity Initiative (RGDI)

Thank you to our partners West Broadway Tenants Committee and our venue Katie + Gunner Gallery!

Indigenous Disability Canada/B.C Aboriginal Network on Disability Society is currently leading the Accessible Housing - Inclusive First Nations Project, which explores accessibility and housing experiences in First Nations communities across Canada.

The project aims to identify current realities, highlight promising practices, and support the development of more inclusive and accessible housing standards.

As part of this work, a survey is available to gather insights from individuals, communities, and organizations across Canada.

04/09/2026

It is estimated that 75% of eligible people are not accessing the Disability Tax Credit (DTC), meaning they are missing out on vital benefits that could offer life-changing support and income. The barriers to applying for the DTC are too great and must be reduced.

We are advocating for an alternative pathway which grants automatic DTC eligibility to individuals already receiving disability benefits through provincial or territorial social assistance programs.

Our new policy paper suggests an alternative pathway that would reduce administrative burdens placed on individuals, medical professionals, and those who support applicants. Why should someone have to apply again to a separate disability benefit when they have already been approved at the provincial or territorial level? These are the individuals who could benefit most from access to additional benefits made available through the DTC.

Those who are eligible need improved ways to access vital benefits.
