Not all orthotics are created equal.

You might be wondering why you would bother with custom orthotics when you can easily buy something over-the-counter at your local drug store.

But here's what you need to know - if you suffer from chronic pain, recurring foot issues, alignment issues or are currently recovering from an injury, over-the-counter insoles may only offer you short-term relief. That is because they are mass produced, restricted to standardized sizing and designed for the average foot. Custom orthotics are created from a cast of your foot which uniquely addresses your mobility needs. They are also made from high-quality, dense materials that are meant for long-term use.

There's a time and place for both - if you wondering which option is right for you, don't hesitate to reach out for some guidance!

Coming home from the hospital after an amputation can be overwhelming. Familiar spaces suddenly feel different, and the loss can fully sink in. For loved ones, knowing how to help (or when to step back) can make a big difference.

Here are some ways to offer support during this time. There's no 'right' way to navigate life after limb loss but compassion, patience and understanding for your loved one and for yourself will go a long way.

If you or your loved one need support, the Amputee Coalition of Canada offers training for individuals to become Peer Visitors - a program that covers topics such as:
➡️How to behave during a visit
➡️Understanding the role and limitations of being a Peer Visitor
➡️What topics are safe, and which are not
➡️When to refer someone for professional help
➡️How to deal with difficult subjects, including religion, s*x, su***de, and others

An incredibly meaningful program that truly makes a difference.

After an amputation, the skin on your residual limb can be extremely sensitive. As you begin preparing for a prosthesis, that limb will eventually experience pressure, touch, and forces it wasn’t previously exposed to.

Desensitization can help your body gradually adapt, making prosthetic use more comfortable over time.

Mental Health Matters.

Today is Bell Let's Talk Day and we want to take the opportunity to reflect on the importance of mental health. For many of our patients, mobility and mental wellness can be deeply connected.

The ability to move freely, regain independence, and participate in daily activities doesn't just improve a person's physical health; it can also have a profound impact on their mental and emotional well-being.

Our work in prosthetics and orthotics is about more than just muscles and bones. It is also about supporting confidence, restoring independence and improving the overall quality of life for each of our patients.

So, today and every day, let's continue to break the stigma, support each other, and continue having open conversations about mental health!

Let’s Talk About DFUs

DFU stands for Diabetic Foot Ulcers—open sores or wounds that develop as a result of nerve damage and repeated pressure on the feet. They often go unnoticed until they become serious. We are always here to help, but we would rather they not happen at all for you because they can be very painful.

The way to manage them includes focus on managing pressure, circulation, and infection around the wound. Careful consideration of footwear, walking boots, and custom orthotic support is required.

Did you know that up to 40% of DFUs recur within a year? That’s why long-term care is essential. Consistently wearing your prescribed orthoses and using protective footwear is key to reducing the risk of recurrence and keeping your feet healthy.

If you have any questions, we can help!
