🩷February 25 is Pink Shirt Day🩷
The movement started in 2007 when two high school students stood up for a younger student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. They encouraged others to wear pink to show support. That small act of solidarity grew into a national movement to stand up to bullying and promote kindness and inclusion.
To celebrate the day, Talk It Up!, a self-advocate committee here at Epic Opportunities, welcomed Amanda Johnson and Kelsey Sobiak, who are both Talk It Up! committee members and members of the Abilities Manitoba Speaker’s Bureau, to present about bullying. They explained what bullying is, the different ways it can happen, and how it can affect people. They also talked about the bystander effect and what to do if you see or experience bullying. Through personal stories and discussion, they reminded us that “It’s everybody’s responsibility to end bullying, and we all have a part to play in protecting other people and standing up for what’s right”. The session also highlighted that people with disabilities are often more affected by bullying and why it is so important to build spaces where everyone feels respected, included, and supported.
Thank you to Kelsey and Amanda for sharing this important message and helping Epic Opportunities recognize Pink Shirt Day!
