We’re continuing our National Volunteer Week (April 19–25) celebration by recognizing the people who ignite volunteerism in their communities.

All week long, we’ve been celebrating the volunteers who support HSC_Winnipeg—Manitoba’s hospital.

Today, we’re shining a light on the team behind Just Like New To YouThrift Shop.

For over 20 years, this well-loved shop has been powered by volunteers; originally founded by a group of retired nurses who wanted to give back. Today, that legacy continues, with 100% of proceeds supporting patient care, research, and innovation at HSC Winnipeg.

To the Just Like New To You team: thank you for igniting generosity in our community, one day at a time.

And, as we wrap up National Volunteer Week, to all our volunteers—this week and every week—we say thank you for your commitment to continuously supporting health care in our province. We are SO grateful for you!

What if something as simple as a berry could help change the future of health care in Manitoba?

For more than 20 years, Dr. Garry Shen has been working to better understand—and prevent—type 2 diabetes, a condition that affects nearly 30% of adults in Manitoba, and close to 50% in First Nations communities.

Now, with support from HSC Foundation donors, his latest research is exploring the power of a familiar prairie food: Saskatoon berries.

In the first known human trial of its kind, participants who consumed Saskatoon berries daily saw promising results, including lower blood glucose levels and reduced insulin resistance—key factors in preventing type 2 diabetes.

This is what donor-supported research makes possible—practical, accessible solutions rooted in community and driven by science.

National Volunteer Week (April 19–25) continues, and we’re celebrating the many ways Manitobans ignite volunteerism in support of health care.

Throughout the week, we’re highlighting the volunteers who help power HSC Winnipeg—Manitoba’s hospital.

Today, we’re recognizing the dedicated volunteers behind the Innovation HSC Radiothon.

From answering phones to sharing stories to assisting with set-up and tear-down of the event, their energy and compassion help turn moments into impact. This year, that impact was record-breaking: more than $525,000 raised in support of patient care and innovation at HSC Winnipeg.

That kind of success doesn’t happen without people who show up, lean in, and believe in better health care for all Manitobans. We’re especially grateful to the Bell MTS and RBC staff volunteers, along with the team at Zoomfone Inc, whose support helps make Radiothon possible.

To our Radiothon volunteers—thank you for igniting generosity and making every call count.

There’s more to come this week as we celebrate the people behind the impact.

As National Volunteer Week (April 19–25) continues, we’re celebrating the many ways volunteers ignite generosity across our community. Today, we’re recognizing the Bell MTS volunteers who bring our annual Mother’s Day Mums campaign to life.

From organizing orders to ensuring every plant finds its way to someone special, their efforts help turn a simple gesture into something truly meaningful. Each mum purchased supports patient care and innovation at HSC_Winnipeg—honouring the people we love while giving back to the place so many Manitobans rely on.

To our Bell MTS volunteers: thank you for helping this campaign grow and for igniting generosity when it matters most.

Stay with us as we continue to celebrate the volunteers behind the impact this week.

P.S. Mother’s Day Mums returns to HSC Winnipeg on Friday, May 8th! Watch our social media accounts for more information.

As part of our National Volunteer Week celebration of our annual event, Savour: Wine & Food Experience, presented by Garcea Group of Companies, we’re continuing to highlight the people who help make this event so impactful. Please join us in applauding the incredible contribution of Charity Auction Group.

Through their expertise and leadership—and with Gregg Maidment generously volunteering his time—Charity Auction Group plays an integral role in bringing Savour’s live auction and Fund-A-Need to life.

Their impact extends far beyond a single evening. Over the years, their efforts have helped raise nearly $3 million through Fund-A-Need in support of patient care and innovation at HSC_Winnipeg—Manitoba’s hospital.

It’s a powerful example of how sharing your time and talent can create meaningful, lasting change. Thank you, Charity Auction Group, for helping turn generosity into impact.

We’ll be sharing one more Savour volunteer spotlight later today.

National Volunteer Week (April 19–25) is here, and we’re kicking things off by celebrating the volunteers behind one of our most impactful events—Savour: Wine & Food Experience, presented by Garcea Group of Companies.

Throughout the day, we’ll be highlighting the many people who help bring Savour to life in support of HSC Winnipeg—Manitoba’s hospital. We start right now with the incredible Savour Committee.

Last year, hundreds of new donors signed up to make their first gift to the HSC Foundation.

Because of that generosity, HSC_Winnipeg can acquire cutting-edge equipment sooner, create spaces that improve patient flow and reduce wait times, and turn promising research into real-world care for Manitobans.

It’s more than a first gift—it’s the beginning of a lasting impact on patients and families across our province.

She was wheeled into surgery with debilitating leg pain—and walked out just hours later.

Candace Andries, a mom of three from Lake Francis, couldn’t stand for more than a few minutes after a slipped disc left her in constant pain. Even coaching her daughter’s softball team meant sitting on a bucket.

Then came a turning point.

Thanks to donor-funded equipment at HSC_Winnipeg, Candace was able to undergo a minimally invasive spine procedure requiring just three stitches. The result?

“When I stood up, the leg pain was gone… the relief was immediate.”

Just hours after arriving at the hospital, she was on her way home—and within days, back to her family, her routine, and the life she loves.

Stories like Candace’s are made possible through donor support of new technology and innovation at HSC.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tannis Richardson, C.M., LL.D. —a remarkable philanthropist, leader, and long-time champion of the Health Sciences Centre Foundation.

Mrs. Richardson supported our Foundation with extraordinary generosity and dedication. As a donor, volunteer, Board member, and Distinguished Patron, she played an important role in advancing health care for Manitobans and strengthening the future of HSC_Winnipeg.

Her connection to health care was deeply rooted. Inspired by her father, Dr. Paul H.T. Thorlakson, and shaped by her own experiences as a volunteer, Mrs. Richardson carried forward a lifelong commitment to improving care for others.

She believed deeply in the power of giving in all its forms, a conviction that shaped the way she lived: “Philanthropy not only supports causes financially but includes volunteering your time and exerting oneself for the well-being of others,” she said. “It could be a gesture, a smile, or a kind word. We can all be philanthropists.”

In recognition of her extraordinary philanthropy and community service, Mrs. Richardson was invested in the Order of Canada and awarded an honourary degree from the University of Manitoba—tributes that reflect the lasting impact she had on our community.

We are profoundly grateful for her support and the legacy she leaves behind at HSC and beyond.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.

Sometimes, the path to leadership begins with a deeply personal moment.

For our Board Chair, Katie Hall Hursh, it was her mother’s breast cancer diagnosis that first sparked her connection to health care—and a desire to make a difference.

In a new episode of Careers Under Construction, Katie reflects on her journey with the HSC Foundation, and the role philanthropy plays in strengthening care for Manitobans.

It’s a powerful conversation about community, compassion, and the impact we can have when we come together.
