Kenneth Graham lived a quiet life—but left a powerful legacy.

“He never asked the world for much. But somehow, without even trying, he brought people together.”

Through a remarkable gift to the HSC Foundation, he’s helping shape the future of care for Manitobans. His story is a reminder that generosity doesn’t have to be loud to make a lasting impact.

Much of Tom Trottier’s life has been shaped by seizures—not just the acute episodes themselves, but the physical and emotional exhaustion that follows. In recent years, Tom, 51, had been experiencing up to 10 seizures a month. For Tom and his parents, Pat and Phil, it’s been stressful and unforgiving.

But life for the Trottiers seems to be turning a corner, thanks to deep brain stimulation (DBS) implant surgery performed on February 6. The surgery, Manitoba’s first-ever DBS procedure for a patient living with epilepsy, was performed by neurosurgeon, Dr. Anton Fomenko.

“Tom is pretty proud that he had the DBS procedure. He tells people he had brain surgery and shows off the scars. He wears them like a badge of honour," says Pat.

Today is Purple Day, an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. By sharing stories like Tom’s, we hope to shine a light on the realities of living with epilepsy—and the life-changing impact of innovative care. Shorter hospital stays. Better patient outcomes. And real savings for Manitoba’s health care system.

In its first year at HSC_Winnipeg, the da Vinci Xi surgical robot saved 330 hospital bed days and generated $1.13 million in system savings.

First deployed in September 2024 as a centrepiece of the HSC Foundation’s Operation Excellence campaign, the robot allows surgeons to operate with extraordinary precision using tiny incisions and advanced visualization.

For patients, that means less pain, lower risk of infection, fewer complications, and a much faster recovery.

Innovation like this is transforming care at Manitoba’s hospital. Learn more and be a part of the difference at https://www.operationexcellence.ca/

Savour Mexico: Wine & Food Experience, presented by Garcea Group of Companies, took place one month ago—and the generosity of that evening is already set to make a GIANT impact at HSC_Winnipeg.

Thanks to the generosity of our guests, partners, and supporters, the evening raised more than $1.8 million, making it the most successful Savour event to date.

Nearly $980,000 of that total came from this year’s Fund-A-Need campaign and auction, which focused on raising funds for vital upgrades for minimally invasive spine and joint replacement surgery, including an additional Stryker Q Guidance System and a new anesthesia machine.

This advanced technology allows surgeons to perform procedures with greater precision and efficiency, allowing our hospital to perform up to 200 additional spine surgeries and 400 more joint replacements every year—reducing wait times and improving outcomes for patients across Manitoba.

Even more exciting, the new spine surgery equipment has already been ordered and will be in place April 1, helping reduce our spinal surgery wait list and improve care for patients from across Manitoba!

And save the date—Savour Germany: Wine & Food Experience is taking place Saturday, February 20, 2027.

Your generosity is making a real difference at HSC_Winnipeg—for the patients who come through our doors and the teams who care for them every day.

On this , we’re proud to share a note from Dr. Richard Liu, one of the thoracic surgeons at the donor-funded, state-of-the-art Wilf Taillieu Thoracic Surgery Clinic and Endoscopy Unit:

“I started here just as the unit opened and over my career, all of our thoracic surgeons have been so fortunate to have such an incredible level of support from the foundation. It’s created an environment that has attracted a world class team and allowed for innovation. It is an environment where it is now easy to provide compassionate patient-centred care. We are all so grateful for that.”

Because of donors like you, Manitoba’s hospital can continue to attract top talent, support innovation, and create spaces where exceptional care is possible.

Thank you for being part of this incredible community.

We are so close to our goal!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors, $2,723,712 has already been raised toward our $2,897,620 goal for Innovation HSC—but with the campaign closing March 31, we need your help to cross the finish line.

“With the support of Foundation donors, we have been able to offer remarkable improvements in care for our plastic surgery patients. With new equipment and new facilities, our patients are in a better position to recover quickly and completely from traumatic injuries.”
—Dr. Leif Sigurdson, Plastic Surgeon, HSC

Celebrating two decades of service—and strengthening our community in the process.

To celebrate 20 years at their location, Waverley Chrysler launched a $20,000 anniversary raffle for new vehicle purchasers in November and December 2025, with one lucky winner receiving $10,000, and an additional $10,000 being donated to a charity of their choice.

We are grateful to share that contest winner Pooja Sharma selected the Health Sciences Centre Foundation as the recipient of that charitable gift.

Thank you to the team at Gauthier’s Waverley for creating an initiative that gives back to the community while celebrating an important milestone. Your leadership demonstrates how local businesses can make a meaningful impact for Manitoba families. Join us in celebrating both Gauthier’s Waverley’s generosity and their 20th anniversary!
