“Winnipeg has a really top-notch neurosurgery centre, and it's been built with support from the HSC Foundation and others. They help to accelerate the pace of improvement in medical care. Gamma knife is a perfect example of that; it's responsible for treating more patients with radiosurgery than all of the other techniques combined.” – Dr. Michael West, C.M., O.M., Retired Neurosurgeon, HSC Winnipeg

On this we invite you to learn more about HSC Winnipeg’s new Gamma Knife—a minimally invasive treatment that uses highly precise radiation to treat brain tumours and other neurological conditions.

Yesterday morning, Jonathon Lyon, President & CEO of the HSC Foundation, was honoured to join Dr. Kent Stobart (President & CEO, CancerCare Manitoba), and Theresa Oswald (CEO, Doctors Manitoba) for a panel discussion moderated by Chuck Davidson, (President & CEO, Manitoba Chambers of Commerce) at the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce MBiz Breakfast Series: The State of Healthcare in Manitoba.

Following a keynote from Dr. Nichelle Desilets, President of Doctors Manitoba, the panel explored the pressures facing our healthcare system—and the opportunities ahead—from workforce challenges and physician recruitment to the capital investments required to strengthen patient care across the province.

At the HSC Foundation, we know that strong partnerships between health care and the business community are essential to building a healthier Manitoba. Thank you to the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce for convening this important conversation.

Philip Lee, C.M., O.M. realized something was wrong, and he knew he couldn’t ignore it.

“I got into the elevator in my building and suddenly my left hand wouldn’t work,” recalls Lee of the mid-July event. “I dropped the soft drink can I was holding and couldn’t pick it up.” With a strong family history of stroke and brain injury, Lee understood the urgency. “I knew something was happening in my brain and I told myself that I shouldn’t wait until morning.”

Lee went right away to a nearby emergency room where a CT scan revealed bleeding on the right side of his brain. He was diagnosed with an acute subdural hematoma (a serious bleed between the brain and the skull) and transferred by ambulance to HSC_Winnipeg for emergency neurosurgical care.

Read more about Lee’s story—and how a rapid diagnosis, specialized care, and donor-supported technology at Manitoba’s hospital helped save his life—at https://www.hscfoundation.mb.ca/stories/the-right-decision/.

Raquel Godin doesn’t remember much from those early days in the intensive care unit at HSC_Winnipeg in 2001. She had just been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis and sepsis. Her liver and kidneys were failing; she was sedated for her intense pain; her blood pressure had plummeted; and she was alert only intermittently.

“I was in the ICU for six days and it was a blur,” she says of the experience, “but one thing I remember clearly was the nurse who would come to my bedside and sing ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ while she cared for me.”

Your dedication, leadership, and impact are shaping a stronger future for health care in Manitoba. Congratulations and thank you for all that you do.

If you’re looking for a reason to smile this Feel Good Friday, this is it.

One week after the 20th Annual Innovation HSC Radiothon, presented by Maric Homes, we’re still feeling incredibly grateful. Thanks to the generosity of Manitobans, the Radiothon raised a record-breaking $525,189.98 in support of patient care and innovation at HSC_Winnipeg, Manitoba’s hospital.

From powerful patient stories to the voices of frontline care teams, Radiothon day showed what’s possible when a community comes together with a shared purpose. Every gift is already helping ensure patients can access specialized, life-saving care — close to home.

Thank you to our donors, partners, volunteers, listeners, and everyone who tuned in, shared, and supported the day. This is compassion in action.
