🧠 What is Bipolar Disorder?
It is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings. These aren’t just “good and bad days” - they are significant shifts in energy and activity levels.

🔍 Recognizing the Symptoms:
• Mania (The Highs): Feeling “wired,” racing thoughts, decreased need for sleep, and impulsive decision-making.
• Depression (The Lows): Feeling very sad, hopeless, low energy, and loss of interest in daily activities.

💊 How is it Treated?
Bipolar disorder is a manageable long-term condition. Treatment usually involves:
1. Medication: Mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, or antidepressants (carefully managed by a professional).
2. Psychotherapy: To help manage triggers and stress.
3. Lifestyle: Consistent sleep patterns and routine are vital.

Our pharmacist at 894 Corydon Ave is here to help you manage your medications safely and discreetly. You are not alone on this journey. 💙

Today is HPV Awareness Day! 🎗️ Let’s Talk About HPV with Compassion & Clarity.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is incredibly common – almost everyone will get at least one type of HPV in their lifetime. Yet, discussions around it are often clouded by stigma and misinformation. At Fair Havens Pharmacy in Winnipeg, we believe knowledge is power, and care is key.

🧬 What is HPV?
HPV is a very common virus transmitted through intimate skin-to-skin contact. While many types are harmless and clear on their own, some can cause serious health issues, including ge***al warts and various cancers (cervical, a**l, oral, and others).

🤔 Symptoms:
• Often, there are no symptoms at all. Most people don’t know they have HPV.
• Some types cause ge***al warts, which are usually flesh-coloured bumps.
• Cancers related to HPV usually develop over many years and may not show symptoms until they are advanced. Regular screenings (like Pap tests) are crucial!

🛡️ Prevention is Key:
• Vaccination (Gardasil 9): This is the most effective way to prevent HPV-related cancers and ge***al warts. It’s recommended for both males and females. Speak to us about who is eligible and where to get vaccinated in Manitoba!
• Regular Screening: For cervical cancer, regular Pap tests are vital for early detection and treatment.
• Safer S*x Practices: Consistent condom use can reduce the risk, though it doesn’t offer full protection as HPV can infect areas not covered by a condom.

💊 Treatment:
• There’s no cure for the virus itself, but in most cases, the body’s immune system clears it.
• Ge***al warts can be treated (e.g., creams, freezing).
• HPV-related cancers are treated like other cancers (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy). Early detection through screening vastly improves outcomes.

You are not alone in your questions or concerns. Our pharmacist at Fair Havens is here to provide confidential, non-judgmental information and support.

Goodbye Winter, Hello Collagen! ✨ Nourish Your Body from Within!

As winter loosens its grip here in Winnipeg, the harsh weather can leave our skin, hair, and joints feeling… depleted. ❄️ It’s the perfect time to talk about Collagen – your body’s most abundant protein and a vital building block!

🧬 What is Collagen?
Think of it as the «glue» holding your body together! Key for skin, hair, nails, bones, joints, and gut lining. Our natural production slows with age and stress.

🌟 Why it’s Important Now:
Winter’s dry air and cold can impact skin hydration, elasticity, and joint flexibility. Boosting collagen can help you:
• Revitalize Skin ✨
• Strengthen Hair & Nails 💪
• Support Joints 🏃‍♀️
• Aid Gut Health 🌱

🤔 Signs Your Body Might Need More Collagen (Deficiency Symptoms):
While not a formal «deficiency,» these can signal declining levels:
• Dull, Dry, Less Elastic Skin (wrinkles, sagging)
• Brittle Nails or Thinning Hair
• Joint Discomfort or Stiffness
• Slower Wound Healing

💊 Application & Doses:
Look for hydrolyzed collagen peptides (powders, capsules, liquids) for easy absorption. Daily doses typically range from 5g to 15g. High-quality marine or bovine sources are best!

• Medication safety — if you take erectile dysfunction meds or have heart meds (like nitrates), talk to our pharmacist about interactions.
• Feeling unwell? Call us first for confidential advice so we can help you safely without exposing others.

Understanding Eating Disorders: More Than Just Food 💜

At Fair Havens Pharmacy, we believe that health is not just about numbers, but about the relationship between your mind and your body. 🧠✨

Today, we are discussing Eating Disorders (ED) - complex conditions that require compassion and professional care.

🧬 What are Eating Disorders?
Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorder are serious medical illnesses, not «lifestyle choices.» They stem from biological, psychological, and environmental factors and can affect anyone.

🛡️ Prevention & Early Intervention:
Building a healthy foundation starts with:
• Wellness Over Weight: Focus on how your body feels and functions, not the scale. 🌿
• Body Neutrality: Respect your body for what it does for you every day.
• Mindful Media: Be critical of unrealistic body standards online. 📱
• Early Signs: Watch for social withdrawal or obsessive talk about food. Early intervention is key to recovery!

🩺 How are they treated?
Recovery involves a dedicated team:
1️⃣ Psychotherapy: Addressing emotional triggers. 🗣️
2️⃣ Nutrition: Rebuilding a healthy relationship with food. 🍎
3️⃣ Medical Monitoring: Ensuring your heart and organs are safe. 🩺
4️⃣ Medication Support: Our pharmacist helps manage medications for co-occurring conditions like anxiety or depression. 💊

🤝 We Are Here for Our Winnipeg Community
If you or a loved one are struggling, Fair Havens Pharmacy is a safe, confidential space. Whether you need advice on supplements or have questions about medications, our doors are open.

⚠️ WEATHER ALERT: Extreme Cold in Winnipeg! ⚠️

With wind chills hitting dangerous levels over this weekend, Fair Havens Pharmacy wants to ensure all our neighbors stay safe. In these temperatures, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 2 to 5 minutes.

❄️ Know the Signs of Frostbite:
1. Frostnip (Early Stage): Skin looks red and feels very cold.
2. Superficial Frostbite: Skin turns white or pale and may feel «waxy.» You might feel a tingling or stinging sensation.
3. Deep Frostbite: Skin feels numb and hard. This is a medical emergency.

🛡️ Prevention & Care:
• Cover Up: Ensure no skin is exposed. Ears, nose, fingers, and toes are most at risk.
• Don’t Rub: If you suspect frostbite, do not rub the area. This can cause tissue damage.
• Warm up slowly: Use lukewarm water (not hot!) or body heat to rewarm.
• Stay Hydrated: Cold weather puts extra stress on your heart.

Stay inside if you can! If you need a prescription or have a health question, please call us instead of venturing out. We are here to support you safely from the warmth of your home.

At Fair Havens Pharmacy, your safety is our top priority. On days like today, we strongly encourage our clients - especially seniors and those with chronic conditions - to stay indoors.

We are here for you:
📞 Phone Consultations: Have a question about your medication or a winter ailment? Give us a call. Our pharmacist is ready to chat so you don’t have to braving the wind chill.
🚚 Medication Delivery: Ask us about our delivery options! We’ll do our best to get your essentials to you so you can stay warm and safe. (Note: Please be patient as weather may cause slight delivery delays).

Feeling more tired than usual this week, Winnipeg? ❄️ You’re not alone. With shorter days and freezing temps, many of us experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - a type of depression that relates to changes in seasons.

🔬 The Medical Bit:
Reduced sunlight can disrupt your body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm) and lead to a drop in serotonin (the «feel-good» hormone) and a change in melatonin levels, which affects sleep and mood.

🛡️ Prevention & Care:
• Catch the Light: Try to get outside during peak daylight hours (even if it’s cold!) or talk to us about Light Therapy lamps.
• Keep Moving: Physical activity is a natural mood booster.
• Vitamin D: Often called the «Sunshine Vitamin,» it plays a huge role in mood regulation.

💊 Treatment:
If the «winter blues» are affecting your daily life, don’t wait. Treatment can include specialized light boxes, Vitamin D therapy, or prescribed medications. Vitamin D is not just a vitamin; it’s a pro-hormone that affects almost every cell in your body.

⚠️ Why it matters:
Low levels are linked to weakened immunity, bone loss, and low mood. In a Manitoba winter, almost everyone is at risk of deficiency.

🛠️ Prevention & Care:
• Diet: Fatty fish and fortified dairy help, but usually aren’t enough on their own.
• Supplementation: This is the most effective way to keep your levels up.

🩺 Treatment & Dosage:
Not everyone needs the same amount! Factors like age, skin tone, and existing health conditions change your requirements. Taking too much can be harmful, while taking too little might not help.

Need a recommendation? Our pharmacist at Fair Havens is expert in supplement safety. Let’s find the perfect dose for you to keep your bones strong and your spirit bright until spring! 🌷

Stop by Fair Havens Pharmacy this weekend. We can help you find the right Vitamin D dosage or chat about ways to support your mental wellness through the rest of the season. 💙

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. 💜 At Fair Havens Pharmacy in Winnipeg, we want to help our community understand that while an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is life-changing, there are ways to manage the journey with dignity and care.

🧠 Prevention & Brain Health:
While there is no surefire way to prevent Alzheimer’s, research suggests that brain-healthy habits can reduce risk:
• Stay Active: Regular physical exercise boosts blood flow to the brain.
• Eat Well: A Mediterranean-style diet is linked to better brain health.
• Challenge Your Mind: Keep learning! Puzzles, reading, and social interaction are key.

💊 Treatment & Medication Management:
Current treatments can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Our pharmacist can help by:
• Reviewing medications to ensure they are being taken correctly.
• Discussing new treatments and managing side effects.
• Organizing medications in blister packs to prevent missed doses.

🤝 Care & Support:
Caregivers are the unsung heroes. We are here to support families with resources, advice on home safety, and a listening ear.

You don’t have to navigate this alone. Visit us at Fair Havens Pharmacy to talk about brain health and dementia care.
