National Day of Action for MMIWG2S

Health care plays a vital role in the MMIWG2S crisis. Too often, Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people face barriers to safe, culturally sensitive, and equitable care. Discrimination, neglect, and lack of access to trauma-informed and mental health services deepen vulnerabilities and contribute to poor health outcomes.

On October 4, we honour the lives lost and stand with families, advocates, and communities in remembrance and in the call for justice.

G'mar chatima tova!
This Yom Kippur, we extend our heartfelt wishes to all Manitoba doctors marking this solemn day of reflection and atonement. May this time of renewal bring peace and strength to your spirit as you continue your vital work in our communities. Let us honour the importance of compassion and healing, both in our personal journeys and in the care we provide to others. Wishing you a meaningful fast and a year filled with health and fulfillment.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation presents a meaningful opportunity to make a plan to fulfill the new CPSM requirement to complete cultural safety and anti-Indigenous racism training. The training requirement responds to Action #23 from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which calls for cultural competency training for all health care professionals. Physicians have until Oct. 31, 2027, to complete training. Learn more: https://doctorsmanitoba.ca/news/national-day-for-truth-and-reconciliation

We’re changing our profile image to our Doctors Manitoba Indigenous logo this week in recognition of tomorrow's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The eagle in the logo represents love, commitment, and caring. Nestled in each wing are figures representing physician and patient, reflective of balanced relationships and understanding of healing through mind, body, and spirit.

The three strawberry blossoms at the base represent First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. A strawberry plant sends runners that take root in the earth, producing new growth. The growth reminds us that the care we take today makes a difference for future growth and generations to come.

Take part in an event, wear an orange T-shirt, and carry your learning forward to action year-round.

MAIL STRIKE: With the latest strike by Canada Post workers, be sure to adjust your practice. If you are expecting mail from Doctors Manitoba, please get in touch at general@doctorsmanitoba.ca. This is a good reminder to switch to email notices from us instead of mail and direct deposit instead of cheques.

Also, ensure your practice office is aware and adjusts patient communications appropriately, to avoid patients missing notices about appointments or tests.
