💫 Castor Oil 💫
This cold pressed oil made from the seeds of the castor plant is one of my favourite home remedies. Since I regularly recommend it to my clients I thought I would share with you some of my favourite uses for it here. 💗
1️⃣ Menstrual Happiness: If you suffer with cramps or clots during your period, castor oil can help. Rub it into the skin on your lower abdomen then place an old cotton shirt or tea towel on your abdomen with a hot water bottle on top to improve the blood flow to the endometrium. This helps improve blood circulation to the uterus which reduces clots and cramps during menstruation. It also helps the endometrium be lined with healthier, fresh and oxygenated blood. However, if TTC, to be safe, use the castor oil packs in your follicular phase only.
2️⃣ Get the bowels moving: If you’re constipated, skip the Senna leaf tea and try this first. Instead of rubbing the castor oil into your lower abdomen, massage it in a clockwise fashion into your skin along your large intestine. Place a heat source on top, and the peristalsis of your large intestine will slowly wake up.
3️⃣ Scar Reduction: Rub castor oil into your scar and either use a GuaSha tool or ceramic spoon to gently break up the adhesions. You can do this 3 to 5 times a week.
4️⃣ Deep Hair Conditioning: Go to sleep with it massaged into your hair once a month (or if you’re lazy like me, just a couple times a year). You’ll probably want to braid it or put it up in a bun so it doesn’t get in your face and also place an old towel onto of your pillow case to protect it from the oil. In the morning wash your hair out (you will probably need two rounds of shampoo) and your hair will healthier than ever.
5️⃣ Induce Labour: This use for castor oil should only be done at the guidance of your midwife, acupuncturist or trained labour support person. I also NEVER recommend taking castor oil on it’s own to induce labour, as that causes a lot of gastrointestinal discomfort. If you take it, it should be done in a tried and true recipe that helps promote effective uterine contractions while subduing the effects on the gastrointestinal system.
