Did you know September is World Alzheimerās Month?
Alzheimerās disease is a progressive brain disorder that impairs memory, thinking, and behaviour. Itās the most common cause of dementia in older adults, leading to a decline in cognition and daily functioning.
The theme this year is ānever too early, never too lateā ā meaning awareness of risk factors for Alzheimerās disease and steps to take for risk reduction is important both before AND after diagnosis!
What are some potential risk factors? Age, genetics, cardiovascular health, level of cognitive engagement, and lifestyle choices including physical activity, diet, smoking, excessive alcohol use, or stress can all impact the risk of onset of Alzheimerās.
What can you do to potentially reduce the risk of Alzheimerās disease? While some risk factors like age and genetics canāt be changed, others can. Lifestyle habits such as routine physical activity, following a brain healthy diet, controlling vascular conditions, engaging in mentally stimulating and social activities, getting proper sleep, limiting alcohol intake, and managing stress are all important ways you can try to help reduce the risk or delay the onset of this disease.
