John's Park, Winnipeg, is a place for learning and healing, dedicated to those children lost to or affected by Residential Schools. Kapabamayak Achaak Healing Forest Winnipeg is a place for learning and healing on Treaty One Land and takes up the call for action on truth and reconciliation. The Healing Forest is a living memorial to Indigenous children lost to or affected by the residential school system, located in St. The site was developed in collaboration with the Healing Forest Winnipeg Steering Committee and Community Elders. The Healing Forest Winnipeg was gifted the Spirit Name, Kapabamayak Achaak, which means “Wandering Spirit” by Peetanacoot Nenakawekapo in 2019. The gathering space, based on the Medicine Wheel, is wheelchair accessible and provides space for quiet reflection and ceremony. A sacred fire pit (stored offsite) is available on request. Four large grandmother stones, with intricate artwork by Natalie Rostaddejarlais, mark the four directions. The Steering Committee is working with neighbourhood schools and communities to develop a living curriculum to learn about medicine plants and Indigenous teachings. A small resource library is also available.

On September 25 and 26, Kapabamayak Achaak Healing Forest - Winnipeg hosted Orange Shirt Day 2025 gatherings for Schools. Hundreds of students came by foot and bus from Northend schools to participate in Indigenous ceremonies, teachings, stories, medicine harvesting, sharing circles, feasting on bannock and jam, and more - all to learn about the history of residential schools and the importance of Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Keepers of Kapabamayak Achaak Healing Forest offer our deepest condolences to the family of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, Mazina Giizhik-iban. We were so honoured to have him speak at the launch of Healing Forest back in 2018. We hope we can honour his legacy in some small way as we continue to memorialize the many who lost their lives or survived the residential school system. As the Honourable Sinclair once said: "We should never forget... because it's part of who we are. It's not just a part of who we are as survivors and children of survivors and relatives of survivors, it's part of who we are as a nation. And this nation must never forget what it once did to its most vulnerable people."

Chi Miigwech, Forest Keepers all! Thanks to Rachelle L Carlisle, and Val T. Oliver-Vint for the songs and drumming, to Judy Wasylycia-Leis for the amazing gift of that precious antique, and to all the other Forest Keepers for hosting the gathering and for providing bannock and jam! Thanks also to Wallace Desmarais for providing the fire bowl, and taking such good care of it. Thanks also to all the Cathedral folks who came over to honour me, and experience, we hope, the power and the peace of Kapabamayak Achaak.
