National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30 has been designated a federal holiday to recognize and commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, and to honour their survivors, their families and communities. Initially we had planned on closing the clinic that day as I felt it would be disrespectful to just work through it as if it were any other day. But then the more I thought about it, it seemed inappropriate to just take the day off, particularly since I haven't really been able to find any public events planned to commemorate the day.
After discussing it with Christopher we have come up with an idea that made us feel good about working that day as well as giving us and some of you an opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way.
We will be working on September 30th, but all fees collected will be donated to two different First Nations focused charities. We have selected WATER FIRST, a charity dedicated to solving the problem of non-potable water in Indigenous communities.
The second organization is Indspire, an Indigenous national charity that invests in the education of First Nations, Inuit and Mรฉtis people for the long-term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada by disbursing financial awards, delivering programs, and sharing resources with the goal of increasing graduation rates for Indigenous students.
If you would like to be a part of our efforts to support our First Nations communities feel free to book an appointment on September 30th and join us in commemorating National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. I would encourage those of you who can't make it to make a donation to either of these great organizations, links will be posted below. Thanks everyone!
