A dated video but, still very relevant. It would be wonderful if all teachers could experience this lesson. It really helps in understanding the struggles of a learning disability in a classroom setting.

Jacob Blumenstein is a very inspirational young man! I highly recommend you check out his website www.kidsread2kids.com which provides free video-audio books read by kids for kids - filmed chapter by chapter for easy listening. Having your child listen to an audio-book is an excellent activity to build their reading skills. And if they are ready, they can even follow along with their own printed copy of the book.

On his website, Jacob is reading from decodable chapter books, Simple Word Books, by Cigdem Knebel. The chapter books are for higher interest levels with low reading level (High/low books). My son is currently enjoying these books. www.simplewordsbooks.com

I hope this video inspires you and your children, and helps to build their confidence as readers. If you find any great resources or ideas to help, please share on our page, StepByStep: Learning to Read. đź’ś - Shannon Brownlee

Will listening to audiobooks slow down children's learning to read? .... No, it will actually help them be better readers!
Audio books also help dyslexic children keep up with their peers, by taking away the focus on decoding and letting them focus on comprehension, meaning, and higher-level vocabulary acquisition.
Here is a great article on this topic.

"The first thing to know is that listening to audiobooks isn’t “cheating.” The main purpose of reading is to get information. It doesn’t matter what path that information takes to reach the brain."

If your child is struggling to learn how to read, audiobooks may seem like a good solution. But will they slow down her progress? An expert explains.

“This under-activation in dyslexia is not associated with low intelligence or poor education, but it does mean that people with dyslexia have difficulty sounding out words.”

Scientists are exploring how human brains learn to read — and discovering new ways that brains with dyslexia can learn to cope.

“Dyslexia is a different brain organization that needs different teaching methods. It is never the fault of the child, but rather the responsibility of us who teach to find methods that work for that child.”

Reading is a skill humans aren't born with, but schools are designed to reward those whose brains are well-wired to read, which can complicate the learning experience for kids with dyslexia.

I've been alerted to a couple of reading apps to check out. 'Teach Your Monster to Read' was mentioned by Shannon Culberson Brownlee, a reading teacher whiz here in Woodstock. The other one is a 'Lively Letters' app created by Reading With TLC. They'll both require some study and it's always best if parents are working with their child.

This is how Wilson Reading works.

Stanford Professor Bruce McCandliss found that beginning readers who focus on letter-sound relationships, or phonics, increase activity in the area of their brains best wired for reading.
