When a Routine Eye Exam Becomes Life-Saving

“A healthy 31-year-old firefighter came in for what we both thought was just a routine contact lens exam. No symptoms, no complaints.

During the exam, I noticed swelling of his optic nerves (right more than left) and referred him to neuro-ophthalmology. MRI revealed something no one expected - a malignant brain tumor the size of an avocado. He was sent straight to the ER, and that night, they operated.

A few weeks later, I found a Starbucks gift card in my bin from him. Not long after, he showed up at the office asking to see me. When I walked up front, he gave me a huge hug and said, “You saved my life.” I was speechless as the truth of it sunk in, then mustered to share my true feelings that we should both thank God. He showed me before-and-after pictures of the surgery – see attached. He’ll undergo targeted radiation and chemotherapy, but his prognosis is good.

This case reminded me – again - that optometry is so much more than glasses and contact lenses. Comprehensive eye exams can reveal serious systemic disease. And sometimes, they truly save lives. Keep your heads up brothers and sisters, and remember what we do this for.”

Public Service Announcement:
This notice is to advise all patients who attend the office of Dr Bree Rogoza, Optometrist that as of October 8th/2025, the office will be closing in Melville.
This is a result of the planned closure of the Melville Medical Clinic and is beyond our control😔😢.
Our clinic has been in operation since around 2003 when my father, Dr Ron Rogoza arranged to continue the practice formerly operated by Dr David Ames.
We have been pleased to provide Optometric care to the city of Melvile, surrounding small communiteis, rural areas and First Nations communities.
It is with regret that we have no choice in the closure of our and your clinic.

How do we move on??
For all the patients who have appointments booked in Melville, we will work with you to move your appointments to our Yorkton office.
This is an arduous task and will require your cooperation and patience in the appointment move.
We have been proud to support the community of Melvile and will continue to do so.
Sincerely, we apologize to you for any inconvenience.
We would rather not close our office.
We would have welcomed the addition of new Optometrists to join the practice, however it has been very difficult to recruit new professionals to smaller centres.
We thank the Doctor Retention Committee, the Physicians and staff at the clinic that we have enjoyed working with.
Thank you to the maintenance trades people who have serviced our building over the years.
Please work with us in this transition as we have many months of patients to move to our Yorkton office.

Thank you so much 🙏🏻 to everyone who voted for our office in this survey that the Yorkton This Week put together.  I am truly humbled.  We don’t do what we do every day for applause or recognition. We do what we do because we love the professional of optometry and always try to provide top-notch service, care, technology, products, expertise and knowledge to our patients. We are passionate about what we do and will continue to do so everyday.  We are here  for you! I just wanted to say thanks again. I appreciate all of you.❤️😎🤓
