How much do you know about assisted virginal birth options?
Forceps delivery is a medical procedure used during childbirth to assist in delivering a baby when labor is not progressing adequately or when there is a need to expedite delivery for the health of the mother or baby. It involves the use of forceps, a specialized instrument resembling tongs, to gently grasp the baby’s head and guide it through the birth canal.
When Is Forceps Delivery Used?
Forceps delivery is typically considered in the second stage of labor (pushing phase) under specific circumstances, including:
Prolonged labor: When the mother is unable to push the baby out despite prolonged effort.
Fetal distress: If the baby shows signs of distress, such as an abnormal heart rate, requiring quicker delivery.
Maternal exhaustion: When the mother is too fatigued to push effectively.
