My Ice Mile is now officially ratified.
Together with about 680 swimmers around the globe I’m honoured to be part of that club of determined and courageous humans to swim one mile (1609m) in waters below 5° C. Just a swimsuit, cap and goggles…

The four pillars of successful ice swimming:
clean swimming technique, cold exposure in training, functional breathing and mental power.

What great words - and very true!

What great words - and very true!

A truly great swimming coach does more than teach technique. They see something in an athlete before the athlete sees it in themselves. They guide, they challenge, they stay patient, and they stay firm. They understand that speed comes from the body, but greatness comes from the mind.

Think about Michael Phelps and his coach Bob Bowman. Phelps became the most decorated Olympian in history, but behind every medal was a coach who believed in him long before the world did. Bowman did not only train him to swim faster. He shaped his focus, his discipline, and his mental strength. He pushed him through hard mornings, tough races, and moments of doubt. Their relationship was built on trust, honesty, and a shared vision. When Phelps stood on the Olympic podium, it was the result of years of quiet work, sacrifice, and guidance.

That is the power of a coach. They do not just prepare swimmers for competitions; they prepare them for life. They turn potential into performance and effort into excellence.

What a week of ice swimming at the International Ice Swimming Association European Championships in Molveno!

The challenging conditions of water temps from 1.5° - 2.8°as well as snow, rain and sun outside demanded resilience, respect and focus.

I swam my first 1000m in 1.75° water, and I was not sure before, if my brain and my body can handle that.
But the mental training, the breathing exercises and the focused pool and OW workouts paid off.
Steady pace on all 100’s and easy breathing throughout made my swim look easy from the outside - and it felt strong from the inside.
To train body AND brain is the key.

Yep, ice swimmers are very special people! 😎

Ice swimmers are a special kind of crazy, and that’s exactly what makes this sport so good.

No one accidentally ends up in ice swimming. You choose cold water, early mornings, frozen fingers and the mental battle that comes with stepping into water at 5 °C or below. From the outside it looks mad. From the inside, it feels completely right.

What makes IISA events special is the people. You bring together swimmers from all over the world, different backgrounds, ages and experiences, united by a shared willingness to do something most people would never even consider. The conversations are as unique as the swimmers themselves, the humour is dry, the energy is high, and the support is genuine.

There’s a rare mix of intensity and light-heartedness. Serious racing, strict safety standards, and at the same time, laughter on the shoreline, frozen smiles, and a deep respect for anyone brave enough to stand on the start line.
