About us

Medartis develops, manufactures and distributes titanium screws and plates, surgical instruments and system solutions for fracture fixation. Headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, Medartis is represented worldwide through its nine subsidiaries and wide distributor network. Our motto is "Precision in fixation”. We place the highest priority on maintaining stringent quality standards, continuous further development and innovation as well as comprehensive service provision for physicians, OR staff and patients. This guarantees long-term customer relations based on partnerships and has formed the foundation for sustainable success since the company’s founding in 1997. Thomas Straumann founded Medartis in 1997, re-entering the field of osteosynthesis in cranio-maxillofacial surgery. In 2004, Medartis expanded its product portfolio with the APTUS Hand and Distal Radius systems, a focal point of which is the predominant TriLock locking technology. This paved the way for a successful entry into orthopedics. All Medartis products are developed in close consultation with hand and traumatology specialists as well as experienced OR teams. The goal of Medartis is to continually improve early functionally rehabilitation through its high-quality products and exclusively developed technologies.

Incoming FESSH President Zaf Naqui shares his vision for the society's evolution, from fostering year-round community connections beyond annual conferences to embracing digital training technologies. The Manchester-based hand surgeon discusses how VR and digital tools may complement traditional wet lab training to reduce learning curves for surgical techniques.

As befits an incoming president, he deserves an additional question beyond our usual three, addressing the important relationship between medical societies and industry partnerships.

54 bones, 34 muscles, over 120 ligaments.
🤚 Although they account for only 2% of your body weight, our hands contain more than a quarter of all the bones in the body. They make the most delicate movements possible: turning the finest screws or playing the guitar. But not just that: they can grab, hold and break a fall.

Exposed as they are, they are commonly injured. Hand fractures make up 20% of all fractures. Even when a tiny bone in the hand breaks, it can disrupt the intricate machinery.

In case of surgical fixation, you need a system that covers the diverse anatomical requirements in the hand.
In other words: you need options.
