Physical Days Bern Physical Days Bern is inviting renowned dancers to give workshops in contemporary dance, ballet, yoga

Physical Days Bern is a join initiative of Marcel Leemann Physical Dance Theater and the Dampfzentrale Bern. For a long time Switzerland has been lacking a platform in which professional dancers from Switzerland and elsewhere can receive advanced training in a variety of dance forms. The further growth of the dance field depends (in our opinion) on establishing contact to new forms and contemporary developments in dance. Physical Days Bern intends to fill this gap by inviting renowned dancemakers from around the world to give workshops in contemporary dance, ballet, improvisation, yoga, Gaga, and other dance forms. This project already seems to have generated a lot of interest — considering that Marcel Lehmann has succeeded in bringing a team of top-class, internationally known teachers to Bern for the first edition. The program we’ve put together is sure to be multifaceted and stimulating. The collaboration with the Dampfzentrale Bern has substantially contributed to the growth of this project. Various dancers and choreographers who have come to perform at the Dampfzentrale Bern have been invited to join Physical Days Bern as instructors. And for a future edition we’re planning on being able to offer instructors the opportunity to present their work in the Dampfzentrale. The collaboration between Marcel Leemann Physical Dance Theater and the Dampfzentrale Bern is based on their mutual interest in using existing resources as productively as possible, complementing each other in a way that leads to outstanding results. The first edition will take place from 27 to 31 July 2015 in “Brückenpfeiler” – a suite of studios belonging to Marcel Leemann Physical Dance Theater, Junge Bühne Bern and Schlachthaus Theater, located directly under the Monbijou Bridge in Bern. For five summer days, on the shores of the Aare river, Brückenpfeiler will become a global meeting point for leading dancemakers. A diverse selection of workshops will be offered simultaneously in the three studios. Since its opening in February 2012, Brückenpfeiler has been continuously growing as a rehearsal space and meeting point for a numerous choreographers, dance productions and theater productions. Companies from Bern and the rest of Switzerland regularly use the space to rehearse – leading to a lively exchange between different regions, styles and art forms. The complex offers a communal space with a kitchen, couches and internet.

Description: The class is developed is a rich and powerful fusion between traditional african dance and my own personal style. my aim is to dig deep into the power-house of movement and to uncover the strength within the locomotion of the body as well as making full use of the undulations of the spine. after having established our base strength, the class progresses into the rhythmical section in order to fuse the grounding actions, readying us for rapid movement- as fast as we can get but also as slow as we wish it to be. The class combines elements of floor work, coreplay ,basic acrobatics and rythmic footwork patterns.

Biography: Shafiki Sseggayi stole many hearts with his performance in ‘so you think you can dance netherlands’ in 2011. Originally born in a small village in uganda, shafiki learned to play traditional african music and at the age of 15 he moved to the big city of kampala, where he was exposed to african contemporary dance. contemporary dance taught him so much about himself and his character - creating in him power, energy and devotion. in uganda he became a member of several different companies, including mutumizi dance company, keiga dance company and latin flavor uganda where he both performed and choreographed his own pieces. bringing aspects of himself, african culture and mentality to anyone interested in the dance world is very important to him. shafiki later moved to the netherlands in 2011 in order to attend the amsterdam high school for the arts; he graduated four years later with a degree from the urban contemporary department. in 2013, he worked with ultima vez under wim vandekeybus and from 2014 _2020 he has been a fixed company member with johannes wieland Dance company at staatstheatre kassel. He has now embarked on a new journey with the newly created Tanz theatre assemble by staatstheatre kassel under the new Artistic direction of Thorston teubl.

Blenard Azizaj workshop description
Blenard’s teaching deals with the transformation of movement and the building of deep dance vocabularies that derive from a conscious stepping out of our comfort zones. The parameters dynamics, sharpness and speed are therefore our main concern. In this way, the work aims to unveil and bring forward those unique features of our dancing personalities, which often remain deeply hidden.

NOTHING TO FEAR AND NOTHING TO DOUBT.
Workshop by Sonia Rodríguez

Every day we try to enjoy the moment, learning and following our way gathering our own experiences. The drive shaft of dancers and movers is our body, it is the tool where we explore movements to communicate and canalize our emotions.
All external impulses influence our dance and manifest differently depending on our personality. Knowledge that we want to expand and share with others.

In this workshop I would like to share my choreographic point of view, contribute ideas to reflect on our capabilities and limitations as a performer. I invite dancers and movers who want to experiment and transform our old patterns .
It will be a continuous process, we will start with a Gyrokinesis® class as a warm up,it is a movement method that addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the lymphatic and nervous system, increasing the range of motion and creating functional strength, while massaging the internal organs through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. It focuses on moving the spine in seven natural directions and the spiraling movements are smoothly and fluidly connected. Rhythmical breathing patterns provide the blood with fresh oxygen, and blocked energy is released. It is an original and unique method, which coordinates movement, breath, and mental focus. The second part we will bring our attention to more complex phrases combining different energetic qualities and different levels inspire in the idea of nothing to fear and nothing to doubt. The first objective is working our presence without fear, this will allow us to be honest with our feelings and inspiration, sharing with the group.
Some moments we will go through the improvisation to explore the free movement finding our own strategies to work our personality, crossing our limits .

Workshop description
This workshop intends to help you explore, develop and bring to the surface super skills, both as an individual and as a team. What are my personal super skills? How do I discover them? How do I bring them to the surface? How do I communicate with other super dancers who have super skills? super uses contemporary dance techniques fused with my own personal style, including acrobatics, hip hop, break dance, yoga, pilates, and martial arts. We will pay special attention to the warm-up, bringing awareness to our bodies through breathing techniques, strengthening exercises as well as stretching to prepare ourselves not only to be super, but to reach super limits and beyond! We will work on multiple physical planes which will ready our body and sharpen our minds to quickly change direction and/or levels at any time, anywhere. We will explore all your super potential in terms of stamina, flexibility, alertness and awareness so that a good result may be produced both individually and through the co-existence of our group. We all have the chance to broaden our perspectives and movement style by exploring different tastes, flares and new approaches. With respect and intelligent analysis, we will shake apart our mental and physical limitations! We will dig deep to find the confidence to believe in ourselves, and I will be with you - close to you with every move. Let us transform our existing selves and get superfresh!
