We Optimo Medical AG found this interesting article on the debate of pros and cons of femtosecond laser cataract surgery (FLACS) between the DEGUM (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ultraschall in der Medizin) and the DGII (Deutschsprachige Gesellschaft für Intraokularlinsen-Implementation). While the DEGUM questions the value of FLACS overall, the DGII holds against naming several advantages of the laser-based treatment. Among their arguments, they also name arcuate keratotomy (AK) surgery for astigmatism treatment, as a valuable additional treatment benefit that comes with FLACS. We Optimo Medical AG could not agree more, and are convinced that the AK planning should be done with Optimeyes™ (https://www.optimo-medical.com/en/product)

Alexander van der Mey is the new CCO at Optimo Medical AG

The specialist for biomechanics strengthens its management.

Biel: As of January 16th, Alexander van der Mey assumes chief commercial officer (CCO) management position with Optimo Medical AG. He is responsible for global marketing and sales.

Van der Mey has studied business administration in Germany as well as in the Netherlands. He gained his professional experience of over 10 years in commercialization and with many international product launches, through multiple positions in the field of marketing and sales in Ophthalmology. As for example, he successfully launched a digital imaging camera in the medical field, as the CEO of EasyScan GmbH in the Netherlands. Van der Mey’s last position was as vice president global head sales and marketing with the German IT-company ifa systems AG.

Harald Studer, co-founder and CEO of Optimo Medical AG says: “With Alexander van der Mey we have found the ideal candidate to further increase our international market presence, and to ramp-up the commercialization of our products further. The Optimo Medical team have just returned from a successful visit to The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS). Ophthalmologists and their colleagues attended the Optimeyes satellite meeting where Professors Dr. R. Menapace, M. Mrochen, PhD, Dr. B. Pajic and Dr. H. Kraker presented their latest experiences with Optimeyes and Prof. Mrochen showed the audience the impact digitalisation is going have on medicine in general and ophthalmology in particular.

The team also met various industry and academic experts to discuss the benefits of Optimeyes and surgeons and distributors from around the world were able to see how Optimeyes works and the benefits for their customers and patients.

The Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery's latest issue features the article "Optimization of surgical parameters based on patient-specific models: Application to arcuate keratotomy". The study compares personalized planning for arcuate keratotomy (based on Optimeyes) with some currently used nomograms (Donnefeld, Lindstrom, intrastromal).
The results show that the surgical parameters proposed by the personalized model resulted in more reliable postoperative astigmatism. Furthermore it concludes that the potential of nomograms has been exhausted; if you want to improve patient treatment you need a personalized approach such as provided by Optimeyes.
