UNESCO (December 4-9, 2023) marked a historic development for our profession by including the profession of midwifery in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List of Humanity on DECEMBER 6, 2023.

This initiative, led by Colombia, Cyprus, Germany, Kyrgyz Republic, Luxembourg, Nigeria, Slovenia and Togo, and supported by midwifery associations around the world, is important for the global recognition of midwifery practice and acknowledgement of the needs of midwives and the communities they support.

Every society has a unique approach and history to pregnancy and childbirth, but it is common that midwives have a responsibility to support and influence how we are born, wherever they are in the world.

Far from its deep roots in cultural traditions, midwifery has also inspired various art disciplines such as literature, painting, music and film.
The UNESCO recognition will reflect not only its historical contributions, but also its ongoing role in society.

In short, the UNESCO list of midwifery is not just a compliment; it will confirm the historical and contemporary importance of the profession, encourage its protection and continuous practice.

MIDWIFE is the ONLY profession listed on the World Heritage List.
