Dr. Laura Lazzari (PhD, MA, MSt, CHt, HBCE)

Welcome to Mothers Matter! I am Laura and I am a HypnoBirthing Practitioner and Fertility Consultant affiliated with the HypnoBirthing Institute. In addition to this I am a HypnoMothering practitioner, a Certified Hypnotherapist, Life & Maternal Coach and Doula. I am the only childbirth educator authorized to teach the Mongan Method HypnoBirthing® in the Canton of Ticino. The Mongan Method is the first, original HypnoBirthing® method from the USA.

I received my training with Sarojini Alva in Haymarket (VA), in the United States, and I was trained in HypnoMothering by Kira Dorian and Tracy Adams, creators of the program. I am a current member of the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists (NATH).

I earned a PhD and I am a scholar and researcher in the fields of Motherhood Studies and the Medical Humanities. I have taught and conducted research in several universities in Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Most importantly, I am a HypnoBirthing mom!

I gave birth to my daughter Emily Sofia in Washington DC in August 2017, and I strongly believe in empowering women through calm and gentle births.

Benvenuti/e a Mothers Matter!

This one-credit course will address a corpus of contemporary transnational texts and films published and produced in the last few years by focusing on birth trauma, pregnancy loss, and empowerment through childbirth. By close reading and textual analyses, we will shed new light on how pregnancy, birth, and postpartum shape contemporary literature and investigate how these experiences are conveyed in writing and on screen.

This course uses the interdisciplinary methods of medical humanities and explores the intersection of medicine, literature, and the social sciences. We will use contemporary sources such as articles, testimonies, cross-genre texts, and films to investigate how pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are perceived in contemporary society. We will identify key factors for achieving positive and empowering experiences, and pinpoint how trauma could be avoided. We will also determine how birth narratives could bring change in obstetrical care and improve communication between patients and health care providers.

Call for Book Chapters:

Mapping Pregnancy Loss Around the Globe

Pregnancy loss is a complex and debated issue that is drawing increasing public and political attention. Access to abortion—whether available or restricted—raises many personal, medical, legal, and ethical questions related to reproductive justice, women’s autonomy, health, human rights, feminism, and motherhood. Although many states and countries currently limit or ban elective abortion, topics like forced, spontaneous, therapeutic abortions, and stillbirths are still largely unspoken in society today. However, literary, cinematic, and artistic works about these experiences have increased over the past few decades, encouraging important discussions that connect both the humanities and medical humanities.

We are seeking contributions that explore all aspects of pregnancy loss: abortion—elective, forced, spontaneous, and therapeutic—as well as stillbirth, emphasizing its complexity and diversity. How do literature, film, visual art, and social media depict and examine the various experiences of pregnancy loss? In what ways does media coverage influence public perception of abortion, miscarriage, and perinatal loss? We welcome contributions that explore both the practical and theoretical dimensions of these representations, as well as how the humanities connect with the medical field to address human and environmental needs. Interdisciplinary approaches and transnational perspectives are encouraged.

We especially invite contributions on pregnancy loss in literature, visual arts, or social media from Africa, Latin America, and Oceania.

Scholars interested in participating are invited to submit their proposals in English, including a title, a 250-word abstract, and a brief biography, by December 31, 2025, to Giulia Po DeLisle at giulia_delisle@uml.edu & Laura Lazzari at lazzari.laura@sasso-corbaro.ch.

This study examines the combined effects of HypnoBirthing education and oxytocin (back) massage on labor experiences and early postpartum outcomes in primiparous women. The program appears feasible, low-cost, and deliverable by midwives within standard antenatal education. These findings reinforce the value of incorporating such non-pharmacological, supportive techniques into prenatal education and care to promote maternal well-being and early bonding.
