Not all curves are created equal. With Scoliosis it’s no different.
Some spines tend to curve lower on the Lumbar spine, whereas others appear higher in the Thoracolumbar spine. Regardless of the location, the curves can cause pain, discomfort and suffering due to spinal deformity. When scoliosis appears later in life, it often tends to be age related or due to past injuries or when the joints and facets connecting them are worn down after years of use and can no longer support the spine in a straight upward posture. This results in pain, pinched nerves, stressed joints…all as a result of these abnormal curves.
C Curve - as you can see this is the least curved spine as the abnormalities only tend to happen on one side or go in one direction. The severity of the curve will ultimately affect how much pain and discomfort it causes.
S Curve - the ’S’ curve is the most common form of abnormality in scoliosis and can be recognized by the spine heading in opposite directions and creating the shape of an ’s’ when viewed at from head on, however, this spinal curve actually is more similar to that of a corkscrew and as the condition worsens, it literally coils and tightens in the same way, which can cause excruciating pain.
Z Curve - the ‘Z’ curve is even further progressed, in which case the ’S’ curve once again, curves in the opposite direction forming a zigzag like spine.
