About the Observership spent at the San Giuseppe Hospital in Milan, Dr. Ćuk said:

"The four-week ESASO program provided a comprehensive and immersive experience in medical retina, combining diagnostics, imaging, clinical decision-making, surgical exposure, and insights into clinical research. Each week contributed to a deeper understanding of patient-centered retinal care and enriched my clinical confidence. The program strengthened both my clinical skills and my appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration in an international setting. Also, this experience significantly broadened my professional perspective and strengthened my motivation to continue developing in medical retina. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and for the chance to meet exceptional colleagues with whom I hope to build future professional collaborations."

Our Observerships are designed to allow fellows to experience how centers of excellence operate, observe leading experts in specific subspecialties in action, and interact with them.

On behalf of the ESASO Foundation and its students, we sincerely thank the Bausch Foundation — committed to advancing eye health through prevention and improved patient outcomes — for their educational grant.

High-quality medical education requires significant resources.

ESASO is actively engaged in fundraising to:
• Sustain the quality of its educational programs
• Support innovation in teaching formats
• Expand access to ophthalmologists worldwide

This contribution supported the Cataract Surgery course covering some of the organisational expenses, and made it possible to offer 15 reduced-fee seats, improving access to advanced training.

Supporting education means supporting better outcomes for patients worldwide.

Good outcomes are not enough if patients don’t understand them.

This study, published in Ophthalmology at BMJ Group , highlights a critical gap in clinical practice: the difference between how clinicians communicate and how patients actually experience care.

From limited understanding to lack of perceived empathy, the findings confirm that communication is not a secondary skill — but a core clinical competence.

Developed with the support of ESASO Plus and Associazione Pazienti Malattie Oculari ETS this research contributes to building more structured, patient-centred approaches in ophthalmology.

A huge thank you to all the participants, researchers, and volunteers who made this publication possible.

Imagine having access to a network of ophthalmologists where complex cases can be discussed openly.

Different perspectives.
Real clinical experience.
Continuous exchange.

Because learning doesn’t stop after a course — it evolves through discussion.

The best decisions are rarely made in isolation.
