Patient motion during MRI isn’t random. It’s predictable.
A 2026 US study by Yokoo et al. analyzing 68,517 exams found motion was significantly more likely in:
🔵 Inpatients (~3.3×) and emergency patients (~2.6×) 🔵 Patients ≥85 years (nearly 2×) 🔵 Severe obesity (+48%) 🔵 Male patients (+14%) 🔵 Black patients (+18%)
Not biological differences — but reflections of how patients experience the scan.
Three things that help, no new hardware needed:
🔵 Tailored pre-scan instructions 🔵 Better positioning for at-risk patients 🔵 Shorter protocols for frail or elderly patients
That instinct at the console? It’s pattern recognition. Now there’s data to back it up.
